How big is Michigan's issue with opioids? Consider this: Michigan health-care providers wrote 11 million prescriptions for opioid drugs in 2015 and another 11 million in 2016 -- enough to provide every Michigan resident with his or her own bottle of narcotics, according to state data. Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl and prescription pain relievers such as OxyContin, Vicodin and codeine. Heroin, horse tranquilizers and heartbreak: How addiction killed 51 in Jackson County last year. Opioids can be highly addictive, and their use and abuse is a growing issue in the United States. While the U.S. has about 5% of the world's population, it consumes about 80% of the global supply of prescription opioids. Below are 11 facts about opioid use in Michigan from state and national data.

A confederacy of junkies.
We must help our red state allies.....
Clearly, I am not seeing the right doctors.
[ Michigan has more annual opioid prescriptions than people ]
Well, that certainly helps explain how Kwame Kilpatrick once got elected mayor of Detroit, at least.

It sounds like they don’t believe in evolution.
” A confederacy of junkies.”
Financed by tax dollars.
So, this is supposed to be part of why we need autonomous vehicles for everyone?
Detroit has less than ten percent of the population of Michigan.
Well, then I guess they have less than ten percent of the opiods. But enough to elect Kwame Kilpatrick in 2008.
Maybe it’s in the water.
I should move there....
Medicare for all and the sharp rise in opioid addiction occurred at about the same time. Could it be that too-easy access to pain killers through insurance is doing people who can’t handle their addictive effects more harm than good?
It just occurred to me. Which famous nationally known “physician” said, at the beginning of his term, “Maybe instead of getting surgery, you take a pill”. Looks like a LOT of Americans are taking his really bad advice.
Every person is that state of Michigan needs more than one surgery per year?
Or we have a whole bunch of Junkies and the government is funding the Opium for the People.
It doesn't have to be this way. Prescription opioids, used as prescribed don't have to be addictive. I know. I had a back injury. I got proper physical therapy, did as I was told, then stopped the opioids, again as directed by a physician, with no problems.
You can check with "Ace," my son who will attest to my results. The problem is abuse.
Sure, opioids can be "fun." Deadly fun!
Oh, MI went for President Trump. I was there. Red State and Proud!
Yes, abuse if a drug leads to being a Junkie.
I noticed the article was very light on the heroin and heavy on the scripts. I checked a county I used to work in, in a few years, they reported no overdose deaths, when I know for a fact there were at least 5 in a two year period...all heroin deaths. But, that doesn’t fit the “oh, you’re overprescribing pain pills!” narrative.
It almost feels like the dot gov has given up on the war on drugs and drug runners and decided to go after the legal stuff.
“It almost feels like the dot gov has given up on the war on drugs and drug runners and decided to go after the legal stuff.”
Just because someone is addicted to the legal stuff, does not mean they are not a junkie.
Michigan is not an especially red state.
