Amtrak names new chief executive

Amtrak has named Richard Anderson, the former chief executive of Delta and Northwest airlines, as its new president and CEO.

The announcement comes less than a year into the tenure Charles W. “Wick” Moorman, who took over as the passenger railroad’s chief executive in September 2016.

Anderson, 62, does not have railroad experience, but does have decades of experience in the airline industry. He served most recently as executive chairman of the Delta Air Lines board of directors after serving as the airline’s CEO from 2007 to 2016.

He also was executive vice president at United Healthcare from 2004 to 2007, and CEO of Northwest Airlines from 2001 to 2004, which later merged with Delta. Anderson began his airline career in the legal division Continental Airlines. Before that he was a county prosecutor.

Anderson will begin his new job July 12.

When Moorman, former Norfolk-Southern CEO, took the job last year, he announced he would be only a transitional president and concentrate on improving Amtrak’s safety culture and strengthen it's operating performance.

First, a railroad guy goes to an airline - now, an airline guy goes to a railroad. Interesting...

Great, just great — a lawyer from a series of failed or bought-out enterprises is going to show the way to success for the Franken-train system Congress concocted out of the remainders of freight railroad passenger operations.

I work for CEO’s. Wick Moorman was my all time favorite boss, ever. Their loss, believe me.

I am looking forward to him effing up the railroad just like he did the airlines.

I thought Anderson did a pretty good job with Delta. While he was CEO they hardly ever lost my bags, unlike under his predecessor. Since he left it’s happened twice, once for five days in Mexico.

Many years ago during inclement weather, I decided to take an Amtrak train home for the holidays instead of driving . Wrong move. There was a major freezing incident on the tracks that lasted well over 10 hours. Rather than continue to thaw out the problem, the shift quit before the next shift got there. . . . .that was my last and never again ride on Amtrak. The conditions were absolutely deplorable. It is disgusting to think about it.

It was a sad day when Santa Fe RR became Amtrak.

I'm glad United CEO didn't get the Amtrak job...you'll have beatings because of more passengers than seats...Amtrak will ask people to be bumped or get a beating... 😀
