Democrats in the state Legislature are walking a tightrope, seemingly oblivious to potential danger.
First, they raised gas taxes and vehicle fees. Then the Senate passed a ridiculously costly universal healthcare plan. Now, the Legislature is getting close to helping undocumented criminals avoid deportation.
How far left can the majority party careen, even in deep blue California, before Republicans start benefiting at the ballot box?
California voters only like state taxes that other people pay. A recent poll by UC Berkeleys Institute of Governmental Studies found that 58% of voters oppose the transportation funding plan.
In contrast to the gas-tax legislation, Senate passage of a single-payer healthcare bill, in which the state would pay all medical costs for Californians, was simply irresponsible. The Senates own analysis pegged the annual price tag at an astronomical $400 billion.
Democratic legislators have been behaving as if they cant fall from their lofty supermajority perch. Keep it up and there could be a jarring splat.

If Venezuela is an example, as far down as they can.
The left does not learn. They merely double down on bad ideas.
California is lost forever, to the RATs no matter what they do.
They’ll destroy California with the heavy spending.
CA GOP could win soon, but they are depleted.
Pretty darn far! The lefties out there are bottomless in their love of socialism and their hatred of all things American.
MSM has succeeded in destroying the Republican brand in CA. Any benefit will accrue to a party with a different name.
Bankruptcy is the only thing which can save California now
Will CA fall off the cliff? Or just devolve into 3rd world status?
With 3.9 million illegal aliens voting and a large segement of the population being hopelessly liberal, they could enact a pact of union with Mexico and still get reelected. California is hopeless. However the reality of sobering bankruptcy is coming soon.
The middle class has been virtually wiped out leaving only serfs and lords ...
The California Republican party seems to have willingly assisted, sad to say. Disorganized, often out of touch, too willing to compromise on some things and unwilling to compromise on others to actually retain influence or accomplish anything. There are a lot of Californians who ascribe to at least *SOME* conservative principles, but the party hasn’t done a very good job speaking to them.
Not that the MSM and skullduggery by the Democrat party hasn’t been a part of it, but lots of self inflicted wounds.
Yep, look at Illinois
Is this Illinois or California?
I don’t care about saving California. Just divide it up and split it length wise from the Sierra Nevada east. I can dream can’t I?
“The left does not learn. They merely double down on bad ideas.”
They just blame the opposition more and use the media to manipulate public opinion.
I have a answer to that. I want to create a petition to eliminate all newspapers or if they want to stay in business using paper as their medium charge them a hefty carbon tax fee. Newspapers require trees to be felled and processed which lessens the amount of carbon removed from the atmosphere. In effect the left is blaming corporations for all the carbon, but the corporations that should be blamed are the likes of the LA Times.
I read the news this morning.... on my cell phone.
I fled the state, as did many others. Those who remained are resigned to their lot.

California is a case study in demographics. The GOP is dead there.
Given that Republicans are not even allowed on the ballot for most statewide offices, thus suppressing Republican turnout generally, I’d say they can take it about as far to the left as they want.
Depends how you measure. CA legislature could pick up half a dozen Republicans which I guess would constitute a “benefit” but still leave the GOP in a position of nonexistence. How long would it take to get the CA leg to 50/50?
An absolute minimum of 20 years.
Is there a mathematical equation? Yes. It was developed at UC Berkeley, under Janet Napolitano’s direction.
(CA diminishing IQ rate per year) * (1/tax increase expressed as a pctage) * (proportion of GOP/Dem in CA legislature expresed as a pctage) * (increase in illegal immigration expressed as a pctage) * (annual increase in yr/yr automotive suspension costs repair) * the Brown factor (which is Governor Jerry Brown’s body temperature, taken rectally, in degrees F/100)
