Trump should copy Truman and make Congress work through August
NY Post ^ | June 21, 2017 | Seth Lipsky

President Trump, time to read up on Harry Truman. The president has mentioned Andrew Jackson as a role model, yet as Congress careens toward a recess it hasn’t earned, “Give ’em Hell Harry” might be the better history teacher. Truman, remember, got his back up and cut short Congress’ vacation at a crucial moment in 1948.

What a move that would be for Trump. Congress has failed to pass a tax bill or repeal ObamaCare — or deal with the debt ceiling. Yet the lollygagging lawmakers are scheduled to take off the whole month of August for a taxpayer-funded vacation.

Clearly some members of Congress see how absurd that looks. Particularly in a season when Americans are prepared to sink more than $50 million into a single congressional race, as they just did in Georgia’s 6th district.

They’re desperate for action.

No wonder the House Freedom Caucus has been agitating for Congress to forgo its recess and work straight through Labor Day. One senator, David Perdue (R-Ga.) reckons, according to The Hill, “there’s a majority that probably supports being here.”

Yet with the GOP “still sharply divided on healthcare and tax reform,” The Hill reports, “it looks increasingly possible that Republican lawmakers will leave town in July for a month long break without any major accomplishments.”

The opportunity for Trump lies in his constitutional power to convene both houses of Congress almost whenever he wants. He could declare that if Congress tries to skedaddle, he’ll call it right back.

Trump needs to tell those bums to get off of their bums and get to work. If he has the authority not only should he ditch the recess he should make them work 6 days a week, 7 if needed.

They don’t deserve any time off. They haven’t done diddly frickin’ squat, and have proven themselves utterly useless.

As far as I am concerned they should surrender their paychecks.

Worthless.

The only downside is that means congress is around to pass crappy laws. When they are gone they cannot foist crapola onto us.

Does anyone at FreeRepublic truly remember the last time they took weeks off from work with ZERO contact with their bosses or the office? Yeah, me neither. Get back to work you swamp-dwelling congresscritters.

I guess the ‘original’ intent was to enable the Representatives a chance to go home once a year and tend to the business they left behind.

Then it was said it was so they could campaign for the next election...

Majority of the Pols were ‘satisfied’ with one term of representing their peers and figured it was time to go to work again.

Of course, most(ha) did NOT have permanent homes in the DC area

The article says Trump doesn’t know he has the power to do it.
He had a rally last night did not hear him mention it either,as a matter of fact I have not heard him chastise congress at all.

Don’t know how true the following is but my understanding of the recess is air conditioning. At one time there was no air conditioning in the DC govt buildings so a recess was called.

One thing I've learned since switching to Washington Journal on CSPAN (network "news" was making me physically ill):

There's a reason Congress doesn't get anything done. They don't work. Their workweek is short. They take a lot of vacations. They'd rather grandstand for facetime in the media and for political points than to solve problems.

Taking away their August vacation would only work if there were a way to lock all 535 of them up in a huge room somewhere, without their aides or outside influences. The rules would be "figure it out or you're not leaving".

And a big chunk of July, too. Don't forget that.

You and the author both seem to believe that Congress hasn't accomplished anything noteworthy in the last six months because they're a bunch of lazy bums.

I think Congress hasn't accomplished much because the Republican leadership simply doesn't have the votes. That isn't going to change even if they work seven days a week, 24 hours a day for the next 20 years.

Hello, the NY Post is telling you they need to stay in session.....ask yourself why!!!!!

Recess appointments to say the FBI can not happen if they stay in session. They are covering their behinds with this move not helping you.

Trump knows. He needs recess appointments more than he needs rino laws passed. There is a reason for this push from the liberal press and conservatives are not even questioning it.

The President can appoint an Interim Director (in the absence of a permanent Director) of the FBI any time he wants without Senate approval. The President has chosen instead to leave Democrat activist McCabe in charge of the FBI.

Trump needs to continue to blast this awful schedule. Ask congress critters to be in their offices on Monday and Friday.

If they insist on a recess, he should just demand - Okay Go!, but don't come back!!

I don't care. If they get stuck in Washington working 24/7 then at least their lives will be as miserable as they are making ours.
