Istanbul (AFP) - Several Turkish journalists went on trial in Istanbul on Monday on charges of links to the group allegedly behind last year's failed military coup.

The trial is the first to include journalists arrested under the state of emergency imposed after the attempt to overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in July although more cases are set to go to court in the next few months.

All those on trial are accused of links to US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen who Ankara says masterminded the bid to oust Erdogan. The coup left 249 people dead, not including the plotters.

Ten of the 17 suspects are on the run while six remain in custody and another remains free pending trial, an AFP correspondent said.

It was not a coup. It was Erdogan just taking over and killing off some of his people who opposed him. Just like these journalists. They must have written anti-Erdogan articles in the past, so they will be put to death more than likely.

I met a Turkish journalist who very well may be one of the 10 on the run at a Rotary meeting. He and his family barely got out of the country. I should find the video.

Turkey should not be part of the EU or NATO, and we should be distancing ourselves from them as a country.

News stories on the Turkish government’s takeover of media company Zaman in March 2016:

Video of the takeover of Zaman. This is what Totalitarianism looks like up close and personal. You can probably get thrown in prison for linking this video in Turkey.

I remember my wife and I watching the Turkish coup on TV and I was thinking “I’m actually sitting in my den watching a country change hands right here on my TV.”

I know that sounds silly, but really...technology has come that far.

I remember hopping it was true. Then figured out it wasn’t soon after.
