The Trump administration said Friday it still has not decided the fate of a program protecting hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation, despite a statement a day earlier that the program will continue.

The mixed signals reflect the political sensitivities behind the Obama administration program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. As a candidate who put tough immigration policies at the core of his campaign, Donald Trump denounced the program as an "illegal amnesty" and said he would immediately end it.

Following news reports that the DACA program would continue, and reactions on both sides of the immigration debate, administration officials said Friday afternoon that no final decision had been made.

"The future of the DACA program continues to be under review with the administration," Jonathan Hoffman, an assistant secretary for public affairs at Homeland Security, said in a statement. He added that while only Congress can decide ....

"DACA was intended to be a stopgap measure to protect young immigrants while Congress worked on a broader immigration overhaul. Such legislation has not materialized."

well of course it hasn't. Congress is much too busy chasing rabbit holes

Trump indicates his middle of road humanity by supporting DACA. He ain’t posturing. He is decent man.

DACA isn’t “humane”. DACA is a big magnet for more illegals.

Enforcing our immigration law is not inhumane.

I am vehemently against DACA. Just trying to highlight that Trump is very much a moderate, not some crazed bomb thrower like Maxine Waters says.

not sure, Jeff. DAPA was affirmed by the Supremes as illegal. The House tried to sunset DACA in 2014 but I guess the Senate sat on it. It may be closed to new applicants, tho?

Using children once more to cast an evilness upon those who disagree. Young immigrants can be tomorrows jihadists drug dealers or rapist murderers

Logic would be to set a final deadline for applying for DACA. At this point, why not July 31? (making it real hard for anyone who goes to their homelands in the summer) It's only an extension of permission to be in the US, which is what Obama put in place. It doesn't punish those who in good faith signed up. And it forces young criminal invaders to sign up (which will get them deported for the laws they broke) or be sent home for not signing up. The beauty of this approach is it can be used to find their invader parents.

Logically, it would be the best way long-term to stop this front in the invasion of the US.

“illegal amnesty”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obama illegally implemented the DREAM Act that failed to pass Congress.
It is still just as illegal as when Obama was running it.
17,000 new applications have been approved since Trump took office along with 107,000 renewals.
It is still just as illegal and unconstitutional as when Candidate Trump accurately described it as such.
Well, ending it right now would be “immediate” enough for me.
Send them home. They’re illegals.
The lure of DACA brought MS-13 to our country. We didn’t have enough gangs to deal deadly drugs and murder people.
After our kids and grand kids get in line behind immigrants. Amnesty.. I don’t care who endorses it, is wrong. Fine companies heavily for using illegal tax dodging labor. No welfare, just a one way ticket to whatever socialist ditch they came from.
Unless, they pay all back taxes, then choose a path.. get in line based on the day they applied for citizenship. Set a time limit and deport those who won’t work for a living. If they can’t work, they need a fiduciary sponsor for a set period of time.
