Puerto Rico's governor is vowing to make the U.S. territory the 51st state after statehood won in a non-binding referendum hit by a boycott and low turnout that raised questions about the vote's legitimacy.
Gov. Ricardo Rossello told a couple hundred supporters waving U.S. flags late Sunday that he will soon create a commission to appoint two senators and five representatives to demand statehood from the U.S. Congress, which has to approve any changes to the island's political status.

"he will soon create a commission to appoint two senators and five representatives to demand statehood from the U.S." I'm sure the Democrats will crumple to this demand because of heavy union involvement and another state full of folks looking for a government teat and willing to be lifelong Democrats. Is this another case of a minority of citizens running the show?

Tell him to demand in one hand, and poop in the other hand. Then ask which was more productive.

“Just say no.”
At least so long as the Pubbies are in control. The problem is, when they are in control, they do such irreversible damage. Can you say government unions?

Been many referendums in the past. Back when everything was fine and dandy they repeatedly voted no. Now they’re bankrupt and suddenly the vote is yes. Funny how that works.

Puerto Rico is great. But they are their own country in reality, if not legally. They have their own culture, their own language. Let them go their own way, in friendship. We don’t need to become a bilingual nation (anymore than we already have).

Puerto Rico is like Mexico, or Europe, it’s looking for white Americans to pay for them to live “uncomplicated, carefree lives!

??”he will soon create a commission to appoint two senators and five representatives to demand statehood from the U.S.” <<
Make sure this is front and center in 2018 elections. The one thing the USA does not need right now is a totally dependent State with full votes and a budget in the negative.
It does nothing for us — cut PR loose and let it be its own country.

Independence.
Give Puerto Rico its independence.
Feed it just enough foreign aid to keep it from going Communist.

I don’t see what statehood buys them! Their current status gives the US Citizenship and all the trimmings (welfare) with none of the responsibility to pay for it - no personal income tax.

How does it work? does it require the consent of a certain number of state legislatures...like Constitutional Amendmenments? If it does...and if that number is two thirds or three quarters it's hard to imagine it will pass.
It seems unlikely that the red portion of the country...the middle three quarters....will agree.
California...Massachusetts...Vermont,yes.Nebraska,Wyoming,Kansas,etc...not so much.

Demand statehood, or what?? The only logical second part to an ultimatum like that would be to go independent. So, leave already!
