WE, GENEVA RESIDENTS CONCERNED ABOUT THE POISONED FOUNDRY ZONE, DEMAND: •An apology from the city government to the community

•All communications from the city about the foundry zone in both English and Spanish, and an interpreter at council meetings

•Signage and fencing on the foundry site alerting people of the contamination there

•An immediate public and independent investigation of what the city knew, when they knew it, and why they didn’t tell residents

•Private residences must be decontaminated before the foundry site

•No new development before our neighbors are cared for

•The city must inform every resident in the contamination zone (by certified mail), place a list of contaminated properties in local newspapers, and post information about the contamination and cleanup in rental residences

•The city arrange a plan for cleanup with every landlord in the zone within one month

•The clean up of the entire zone must be completed by March 2018 (before the next growing season)

•Free medical and soil testing for all affected residents

•Free healthcare for all impacted residents

•Free access to nearby, supervised, outdoor spaces for children

•Free access to nearby fruits and vegetables

•Free space nearby for a community garden (e.g. raised beds), with soil, fertilizer, seeds, and tools provided

•Free testing and admission to dog parks for pets

•Tax relief and rent holiday until each contaminated property is cleaned up

•Compensation of back taxes covering the time between when the city knew of the contamination and when it informed the residents

•The immediate formation of an Environmental Justice Council comprised of Geneva residents who have—by virtue of their participation in organized actions around these issues—the knowledge and experience necessary to protect our communal living space from environmental threats, past, present, and future.

My 94 year old aunt Mary who immigrated from Italy doesn’t speak English or Spanish so well.

I want an Italian translator at EVERY meeting. Even though we don’t live there :)

And YES, we tried to tell her you need to learn better English but she’d just curse at us in Italian :)

ONLY one that was that stubborn.

My old college town makes it into the news again . . .

Anyone have any idea what area of Geneva the Foundry was operating from? I don’t ever remember even hearing about a Foundry in my years there.

Haven’t been to Geneva for 15 years.
As I recall, there are some nice spots around the college, but the rest is
a typical central New York deteriorated town.
There was quite a bit of industry there at one time, but gone now.
I know of foundries that were in Waterloo and Seneca Falls, which are neighboring towns and I’ve heard of foundries in Geneva, but the actual names escape me now.
The town has a significant Hispanic population as I recall.

Looked it up. It was operating until the 1980s, and it’s at 43 Jackson St.

I don’t have time to look it up, right now, but I am curious about what sort of contaminants an iron foundry would produce. The NYS environmental site mentioned “historic emissions”and said something about the contamination being off site. ???

to an envirowacko, everything is a contaminent

I would guess there are traces of heavy metals lurking about

The foundry here closed and the property was cleared to the ground. It lies vacant for the reasons a buyer fears bankruptcy on receiving title.

The foundry bankrupt and the city wound up with the property for taxes

“An estimated 15% of foundry-zone residents speak only Spanish, making the English-only city council meetings, which provide crucial updates about health concerns and cleanup details, inaccessible to many Genevans.”

NO, we are all (well, some of us) AMERICANS! In any case, here in America we speak ENGLISH! If you can’t speak English it raises obvious questions....

1. Are you an illegal?
2. Are you a criminal
3. Are you a terrorist?
4. Do you hate this country so much that you REFUSE to learn our language?
5. Do you want to live here for all the benefits, but won’t assimilate into the culture?
6. Did you come here to CHANGE America into Mexico?

Thanks! It is kind of part of the edge of a residential area and I think back then it was pretty much the same type of development, so I’ll keep an open mind on this one. If the ground is contaminated then a clean up is certainly warranted.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/107812.html

“Former Geneva Foundry Site

The former Foundry is located on 2.5 acres at 43 Jackson Street, Geneva, NY (Ontario Co.), in a mixed urban residential/commercial neighborhood. A foundry was present at the site from the late 1800s until the 1980s and part of the site was a coal yard until expansion of the foundry in the 1940s. Most of the contamination is offsite and related to historical air emissions from the foundry.”

I read over the site but could not determine exactly WHAT the pollution is/was. Lots of verbiage about bureaucratic procedures, but that’s it.

“Full employment for Tort Lawyers, Bureaucrats and Activists” boilerplate.

Would an iron foundry produce heavy metals?

"...•Signage and fencing on the foundry site alerting people of the contamination there..."

Sounds like the area is contaminated by Mexicans, which is just sad.

One more piece of America that isn't really America any more.
