Finding Waldo
June 10, 2017
The [Ethiopian] asked Philip, Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?
Acts 8:34
Waldo is the cartoonish star of Wheres Waldo, a now-classic best-selling childrens book series. Waldo hides himself in the crowded scenes on each page, inviting children to find where hes hiding. Parents around the world love the moments of sweet discovery when their childrens faces signal theyve found Waldo. They also enjoy the occasions when theyre invited to help find him.
Shortly after Stephen, a deacon in the early church, was stoned to death for proclaiming Christ (see Acts 7), widespread persecution broke out against Christians, causing many to flee Jerusalem. Another deacon, Philip, followed these fleeing Christians into Samaria, where he proclaimed Christ and it was well received (8:6). While there, the Holy Spirit sent Philip on a special mission to the desert road. It must have seemed a strange request given the fruit his preaching was producing in Samaria itself. Imagine Philips joy, then, when he met and helped the Ethiopian court official find Jesus in the pages of Isaiah (vv. 2640).
We too are often given the chance to help others find Jesus throughout the Scriptures so they may know Him more fully. Like a parent witnessing the joy of discovery in their childs eyes and like Philip helping the Ethiopian find Jesus, it can be exhilarating for us to witness the moment of discovery in those around us. As we go through our days, may we be prepared to share Christ as the Spirit leads us, whether they are people we know well or those we meet even just once.
The biggest work a Christian can do is to find his friend and introduce him to Jesus Christ.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
GEORGE GERSHWIN
PORGY AND BESS
BRUCE HUBBARD: A WOMAN IS A SOMETIME THING You have to start with the opera itself. Hubbard had some amazing vocal chops but died far too young. This video is from the 1993 Glyndebourne production.
Here Gershwin joins Berlioz, Brahms, Wagner, Verdi, Scott Joplin and others who were inspired writers for chorus. His sense of orchestration also puts him in the top rank. After staging American operatic disasters like Samuel Barbers Vanessa, its astonishing that it took the Metropolitan Opera 50 years to stage a masterpiece that had been sitting right under its collective nose for all those decades.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
GEORGE GERSHWIN
PORGY AND BESS
JASCHA HEIFITZ: A WOMAN IS A SOMETIME THING There were a number of European musicians who fled political problems in Germany and Russia during the Thirties, and three who hung out together were Jascha Heifitz (violin), Gregor Piatigorsky (cello) and Sergei Rachmaninov (piano). Ive often wished the three had formed a trio to play the huge amount of chamber music written for those three instruments. After the war, Heifitz in fact teamed with Piatigorsky and Arthur Rubinstein to record that repertory, and they were quickly named The Million Dollar Trio.
Like Sergei, Jascha loved the American musical theater, and for encore pieces he wrote his own arrangements of show tunes. Fortunately, he recorded a number of them with Brooks Smith in 1954 and left a legacy providing a window into the culture of the Thirties. His arrangement gives the tune a hint of Brahms.

To: The Mayor
Good evening, Mayor, and thank you for today’s sustenance for body and soul.
The weekend finally got here. Hope you have some time to relax.
My sister and I are getting a little time to visit, but her main job is the day shift for my Mom. She talks to her by phone a couple times a day, but while she is here, she is taking the day shift and I continue the night shift. It is still a “fun” time for us.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG: A WOMAN IS A SOMETIME THING Satchmos vocal style was unique and inelegant, but his trumpet playing defined jazz for a long time. When he cuts loose on his instrument, this recording from 1957 really takes off.
