Bernie Sanders Could Have Won. That's the Corbyn Lesson for America
The Guardian ^ | Steven W Thrasher

Posted on 06/09/2017 10:12:43 AM PDT by nickcarraway

Bernie, like Corbyn, offered hope that another world was possible. He’s exactly the kind of candidate the Democrats must rally behind in the future

Had he been the Democratic party’s nominee, Bernie Sanders could have won the presidency. I’ve been waiting more than half a year to say this aloud, and today’s as good a day as any to get it off my chest.

I’m not saying this just because Jeremy Corbyn’s amazing candidacy, inspiring perhaps more than 70% of 18-24 year-old British people to vote, skewered Theresa May’s trash austerity politics and imperiled her prime ministership.

I’m saying this because it’s a good moment to reflect upon how, if the so-called left (especially the Labour party in the UK and the Democratic party in the US) rallied around candidates who supported actual leftist politics – a commitment to strong labor protections, a confidence in creating a robust safety net, an aversion to working for Wall Street, a distaste for fighting to get “centrist” votes, and an unwavering commitment not to back down to intimidation from the right – their candidates could win.

Yes, I know that May, who tweeted that if she were to “lose just six seats I will lose this election and Jeremy Corbyn will be sitting down to negotiate” Brexit, is slithering her way back into another government, even as her party has lost 12 seats. But she has been been severely weakened.

The number of voters who desire conservatism is dying off faster than Theresa May’s credibility. Voters who want centrism are kicking the bucket more quickly than Hillary Clinton can make excuses for why she lost. Young people and non-white voters are the future of electoral politics.

Yup. If Hillary and the DNC hadn’t hacked the Democrat Primaries, Bernie probably had a chance.

A chance at 25% maybe.

That guy was an ass hat clown. Still is a wing-nut.

Bernie vs. Trump?

Socialism vs. Capitalism?

Bernie would have been skunked.

Sander's would have had his own problems.

The Tories ran a bad campaign, but they are still leading the nation, not Labour.

True. At least Hillary pays some lip service to “Capitalism”, though I’m sure she’s not far off from Bernie’s beliefs. Bernie is a devout anti-capitalist and doesn’t lie about it like other Dems.

Socialism vs. Capitalism?

Socialism vs. Free Enterprise

Huge overbearing nanny government vs. freedom

Free Enterprise is what you get when people are free.

If we use their language, we lose the argument.

Bernie's candidacy was dead from the moment he gave Hillary a pass on the emails. He demonstrated a complete lack of seriousness on national security, and following the rule of law.

Had he won the nomination, the entire country would have found out how this "good socialist's" wife bankrupted a small college in New Hampshire by lying on financial forms.

In common parlance, his wife committed financial fraud, and should be in prison.

It's about who can form a majority alliance. May doesn't have a majority. Corbyn has a chance to form one with another party. LibLabs said they wouldn't with May. There's a chance another election is in the offing.

It might be noted that May was steadfastly against Brexit. Corbyn said he was against it, but made it clear he probably actually was against it. May was the more anti-Brexit candidate. For what it's worth.

I didn’t hear anyone arguing for capitalism in our election.

He’s a wingnut, but he appeals in the Rustbelt. In the end that’s what cost Hillary, she’s Mrs NAFTA and Trump and Bernie both ran on fixing NAFTA (different plans but both addressed it). It’s highly unlike Trump takes the belt from Bernie, and if you flip those state Trump loses.

Leave it to the Guardian to assume America is yearning for a far left socialist (communist) in the White House. Too many brands of toothpaste, indeed!

Correct, but there is a strong base of Democrat voters who think the same what he does. The want to do nothing and expect that their fellow citizens should take care of their every want.

May has already allied with the DUP, so she has the majority.

“Bernie’s candidacy was dead from the moment he gave Hillary a pass on the emails”

The moment he gave her a pass in the debate, I turned to my brother and said, ‘he just lost the nomination’.

I still think folks see him as a tottering old fool.

IMO, by the time Trump got through with him he’d be left with his bowl of oatmeal in a diner in a city whose name nobody had heard before.

He sounded good against Hillary. Hillary! LOL

Who wouldn’t sound good next to Hillary?

Next to Trump, no way. He simply doesn’t have the experience to back up his pipe dreams.
