That is what will happen here, too, if we ever stop watching the Feds and the States.
France has always been strange. Back in the 14th Century, England had civilian militia trained as archers. They also considered themselves to be FREE MEN.
France, took serfs and made them archers. Problems arose when the archers began to consider themselves to be Free Men and were reluctant to returning to serfdom when the wars were over.
So the French relied mostly on mercenary Genoese crossbowmen.
The Brits were the first to register and confiscate registered arms, in South Africa.
The natives would work for a year and wanted only a “Birmingham gas pipe” (trade musket) as pay. This so alarmed the Brits they demanded all trade muskets be turned in and registered with the local government office.
The muskets were seized and not returned. When the natives protested, the guns were returned so damaged they were not usable.

Interesting note: To “proof” a Birmingham trade musket, the barrel was filled with water. If there were no leaks, it passed and was good enough for a native.
