Republicans in Kansas broke ranks with the state's conservative governor Wednesday night, voting to raise rates and put an end to a series of tax cuts. The GOP revolt is a defeat for Gov. Sam Brownback, who overhauled the state's tax system beginning in 2012, bringing down rates and causing repeated, severe budgetary shortfalls.
Kansas's legislature is overwhelmingly Republican, but moderate GOP lawmakers joined with Democrats, overriding Brownback's veto of a bill they'd already passed once that would raise taxes again by $1.2 billion over two years. Eighteen of the state's 31 GOP senators and 49 of the 85 Republican members of the House voted against the governor.

I thought Brownback was re-elected.
Brownback was re-elected but his supporters in the KS legislature were primaried out this past summer by the more moderate faction of the KS GOP.
Cutting taxes is all well and good, but you’d better have a plan to cut spending along with it.
I’ve always believed in cutting the spending first, then cut the taxes.
Sounds like the KS legislature is like the TX Assembly: many liberal Republicans joining with Democrats to shut out the conservatives.

That's the problem. The promised revenue increases due to more economic activity never materialized. The legislature is just telling Brownback that, for whatever reasons, these economic models are not working and it is time to abandon them. I don't like paying taxes any more than anyone else does but there is a minimum amount that needs to be paid. This is Kansas we are talking about - wild extravagant spending is not occurring.
As a side note to this thread, please consider the following.
Noting that the US Mail Service (1.8.7) is one of the very few domestic services that the states have expressly constitutionally authorized the feds to tax and spend for, most federal domestic spending programs based on stolen state powers and state revenues stolen by means of unconstitutional federal taxes, Kansas Republicans need to work with CA Gov. Brown and NY Gov. Cuomo to do the following.
These political leaders need to lead the states to put a stop to unconstitutional federal taxes, taxes that the corrupt, post-17th Amendment ratification Congress cannot justify under its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers.

After unconstitutional federal taxes are stopped then the states will probably find a tsunami of new revenues that they won’t know what to do with, establishing their own healthcare programs, improving schools, increasing funding to police and fire departments, and repairing infrastructure for starters.
On the other hand, patriots are warned that if they do not support Pres. Trump in peacefully “forcing” the feds to surrender state powers that they have stolen from the states back to the states, then it is only a matter of time before another lawless president works in cahoots with corrupt Congress to use stolen state powers to once again oppress the states and their citizens.

Since Trump entered the ’16 presidential race too late for patriots to make sure that there were state sovereignty-respecting candidates on the primary ballots, patriots need make sure that such candidates are on the ’18 primary ballots so that they can be elected to support Trump in draining the unconstitutionally big federal government swamp.
Such a Congress will also be able to finish draining the swamp with respect to getting the remaining state sovereignty-ignoring, activist Supreme Court justices off of the bench.
In fact, if Justice Gorsuch turns out to be a liberal Trojan Horse then we will need 67 patriot senators to remove a House-impeached Gorsuch from office.
Noting that the primaries start in Iowa and New Hampshire in February ‘18, patriots need to challenge candidates for federal office in the following way.
While I Googled the primary information above concerning Iowa and New Hampshire, FReeper iowamark brought to my attention that the February primaries for these states apply only to presidential election years. And after doing some more scratching, since primary dates for most states for 2018 elections probably haven’t been uploaded at this time (March 14, 2017), FReepers will need to find out primary dates from sources and / or websites in their own states.
Patriots need to qualify candidates by asking them why the Founding States made the Constitution’s Section 8 of Article I; to limit (cripple) the federal government’s powers.
Patriots also need to find candidates that are knowledgeable of the Supreme Court's clarifications of the federal government’s limited powers listed below.

You don’t have to cut huge amounts. If the congress had tied spending to inflation in the 80’s the budget would have balanced in Reagan’s second term with the increases in revenue due to the tax cuts.
State level Republicans are just like their betters in Washington, they both want to spend money and buy votes like good liberals.
