BEIRUT — The dramatic arrival of Da’ish (ISIS) on the stage of Iraq has shocked many in the West. Many have been perplexed — and horrified — by its violence and its evident magnetism for Sunni youth. But more than this, they find Saudi Arabia’s ambivalence in the face of this manifestation both troubling and inexplicable, wondering, “Don’t the Saudis understand that ISIS threatens them, too?”
It appears — even now — that Saudi Arabia’s ruling elite is divided. Some applaud that ISIS is fighting Iranian Shiite “fire” with Sunni “fire”; that a new Sunni state is taking shape at the very heart of what they regard as a historical Sunni patrimony; and they are drawn by Da’ish’s strict Salafist ideology.
Other Saudis are more fearful, and recall the history of the revolt against Abd-al Aziz by the Wahhabist Ikhwan (Disclaimer: this Ikhwan has nothing to do with the Muslim Brotherhood Ikhwan — please note, all further references hereafter are to the Wahhabist Ikhwan, and not to the Muslim Brotherhood Ikhwan), but which nearly imploded Wahhabism and the al-Saud in the late 1920s.
Many Saudis are deeply disturbed by the radical doctrines of Da’ish (ISIS) — and are beginning to question some aspects of Saudi Arabia’s direction and discourse...
Conclusion:
The Saudi Ikhwani history is plain: As Ibn Saud and Abd al-Wahhab made it such in the 18th century; and as the Saudi Ikhwan made it such in the 20th century. ISIS real target must be the Hijaz the seizure of Mecca and Medina and the legitimacy that this will confer on ISIS as the new Emirs of Arabia.

For a while, the Ottoman Empire was able to keep the more violent types under control. But then references how the British and Americans acquiesced to the spread of Islamic puritanism in order to arrange the global pieces after the fall of the Ottoman empire. One thing I noted is that the purists preferred to use knives to kill since guns and such were Western creations.
The harsh ultra-violence of Muslims vs Muslims and other non-Muslims is documented. The author suggests that ISIS and movements like it are really about the control of Medina and Mecca and theres nothing Western powers can do but stand by and watch.
Well worth the read even if it is on Huffington.
Except be ready to put someone down if they come at us with a knife, gun, truck or pressure cooker.
Bkmk
Wonder if ISIS would blow up the Kaaba in Mecca?
If our NEA was in charge of their history education, they would not have had a chance to remember anything.
And/or arrest them before they come at us
I read that the British encouraged Wahabbism to weaken the Ottoman Empire. British and French Orientalism got us involved in this mess of a region.
Sorry but I neither need nor do I want to understand hateful nonsense. Nor do I want to understand or try to reason with a rabid dog. I simply want them to be hunted down and slaughtered like the rabid dogs they are!
Maybe we should nuke it and end all this nonsense.
Sorry, have little or no interest in wasting an hour of my life reading about the problems in that sandy shithole far enough away from us that I don’t give a chit!
Let’s use our OWN f**king oil and NG as efficiently as possible, get the hell OUT of that region, let them kill one another off if they must — as they have been for centuries —, bomb any segment of them that poses a REAL, HONEST-TO-GOD THREAT to US or a needed ally back to the STONE AGE.

Nuke ‘em all - let God sort them out.
I will always believe that saudi arabia should have been the first take down in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.
Any dignitaries should have been meeting with the American military governor.
The history of Wahhabism in Arabia is but a modern iteration of periodic phases of the History of Islam wherever it has spread. Wahhabism was not a problem for the world so long as it was confined by the poverty of Moslem society under European colonial domination and did not rise to trouble the saner parts of the earth until the West endowed it and all of Greater Arabia with excess resources in order to make Worldwide Jihad a possibility then a reality. Islam is like the Thugee cult of India writ very very large.
It might. All such things are regarded as pagan idols, even the Kaaba. That is why I scoff at suggestions that we nuke Mecca. The requirement of the Hajj is to visit Mecca. If Mecca is a glowing hole in the ground the requirement still stands and does not specifically include the Kaaba. The Arabians had no second thought in the last few years about razing the house that was the home of Mahomet in Mecca to build another inn for the hadji. Revering that place is idolatry. To the purists, that goes for any physical object or graphic representation.
And we encouraged it as a counter to the communist PLO, the Bath parties in Syria and Iraq, and the socialist trajectory of Egypt and it's African neighbors. The Saudis and their violent religion have been very useful to the United States over the years.
Amen. We should never have allowed the Arabian nationalization of the oilcos in Arabia. That provided the wealth to finance the resumption of Jihad which had been in abeyance since the collapse of the Ottomans.
I believe the Ba’athist and the Communists and the Pan Arabists would all have been trivial phenomena if the West had continued to deny the umma the resources for Jihad. As soon as there is excess wealth there is Jihad. That is the nature of Islam. Jihad is quiescent for a time when it suffers a complete and impoverishing defeat at the hands of the West and resumes when it begins to build wealth by raiding or extortion of the Western cultures.
Remarkable document coming from the Huffington Post.
Extremely accurate and less lurid than the real details.
Wahhabis are savages who kill their own and anyone outside Islam with unmatched brutality.
