President Trump will reportedly introduce a plan on Monday to privatize the air traffic control functions of the Federal Aviation Administration this week as part of a broader push for infrastructure reform.

The Washington Post reports that Trump will instruct Congress to pursue privatizing air traffic control and spin it off into a nonprofit corporation. Trump could send principles for the plan to Congress as early as this week, according to the report.

Trump will be joined by the CEOs of several major airlines as he makes his air traffic control announcement, ABC News reported Sunday evening.

I wonder what Reagan would think of this. He broke the back of the Union.

Good.
Canada privatized ATC a long time ago and it’s no problem.

JMO, one advantage could be that it wouldn’t take 10 volumes of paperwork and 7 years to can an incompetent or lazy ATC.

It would allow them to upgrade the air traffic system. It currently works based on ground radar. What most countries are doing is switching to a GPS location system. The GPS system would be faster allowing better throughput through the airways supposedly. I assume that they can get away with less controllers since much of it could be automated.

Good! Can someone tell me if we’re still footing the bill for NASA? I really don’t know and if we are then THEY need to privatize.

I think an unintended consequence could be a strengthened union who might once again have inconvienent tools during labor disputes.

‘what’s the advantage ?’

ever been to the DMV ? All gov’t entities are run like the DMV.

Everything the gov’t touches is lower quality and more expensive. Everything

“I remember when Reagan did that.”

Unfortunately Reagan didn’t privatize the ATC, he simply declared the then current union, PATCO, guilty of an illegal work stoppage, and fired all their members. Now there’s a “replacement” PE Union representing the ATC. They have yet to try a work stoppage, but they do “represent” the controllers, and I just imagine they will pi$$ and moan at the prospect of working for a private entity. But it is good that Canada has already done it, because that will lend some degree of credence to the change.
BTW, maybe if we privatized it, the new leadership could find a way to implement a 21st century system as opposed to the antiquated one we have today. Using GPS for planes to go from place to place, as opposed to “airways” controlled from the ground would save bunches of money.

I wonder if retaining the ground radar infrastructure as a backup would be prudent considering that GPS is satellite-based and at least one competitor country seems to have made progress in its ability to zap our satellites.

This is good. Currently Air Traffic Control funding is micro managed by Congress.
