US President Donald Trump discussed trade with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc during a White House visit on Wednesday (May 31) and welcomed the signing of business deals worth billions of dollars and the jobs they would bring.
General Electric Co said it had signed deals with Vietnam worth about US$5.58 billion for power generation, aircraft engines and services, its largest ever single combined sale with the country.
"They just made a very large order in the United States - and we appreciate that - for many billions of dollars, which means jobs for the United States and great, great equipment for Vietnam," Trump told reporters at the White House.
Phuc said on Tuesday he would sign deals for US goods and services worth US$15 billion to US$17 billion during his Washington visit, mainly for high-technology products and for services....

My daughter spent a year in Vietnam recently. They all want to learn English and become capitalists.

I have said it again and again. If they wanted to win that war so damn bad, fine. Let them choke on it. I was against letting private companies do business there for decades and am certainly not happy with our government doing this. At least wait until those of us who lost friends and family over there die before you start doing this stuff. I had friends who left legs over there, bodies over there, etc. etc. But for a phenomenally high lottery number I could have been one.
I don’t understand what he is up to but here is where I quit.

If you have a problem with what transpired in Vietnam back then, the real target of your ire should be your own 'effing government. They botched the Vietnam War from start to finish, then pissed all over the veterans who returned.
I dont understand what he is up to but here is where I quit.
Quit what?

Any ethnic Vietnamese in this country’s jails should now have a place to be deported to.

As long as we’re contemplating colossally stupid ideas...
Should we deport ethnically Scots people to Scotland, ethnically German people to Germany, etc, etc,

This is good news for both Việt Nam and the USA, especially if Uncle Sam returns to the Clinton Bush policy of leaning on the Việt government to relax its restrictions on the people and property. President Obama had contempt for Việt Nam because Việt Nam was striving for partnership with the USA in reining in China and Vietnamese are very pro American. Obama despises that quality in foreigners. He did not continue to promote relaxation of the government toward the people, in fact, gave signals that the people should be more controlled. There are elements within the Party and the Government (almost the same thing) who desire to democratize the system continually more. If they are encouraged directly by the USA the results are quite apparent in the country. The government regressed a bit with Obama at the helm in the USA but not terribly much. The Vietnamese leadership, yea, the nominal Communists, like the country becoming rich which it can only do if the market is allowed to work and the government does not throw up roadblocks. Việtnamese Communists, being Việts are very practical people and when something, like socialism, just isn't working, they kick it to the curb while retaining the slogans and vocabulary. There is much more freedom now than 20 years ago. You don't need a pass and permission to travel though you still have to register if you stay a couple of days. People travel now as easily as Americans and travel a lot.
The religious repression which started to increase when Obama stopped American influence began to abate again in the last couple of years and the Catholics were jubilant at Trump's election. the Protestants who experienced the heavy hand of Hà Nội much longer are feeling the pressure beginning to lift.
