Most foreign owned hotels are owned by Indians. They generally start with small, rather run down hotels and improve them, then sell to a family member when they buy bigger and better.
The overwhelming number of the proprietors have the last name of Patel, which is loosely translated Innkeeper.

Is this something America should be proud of?
I thought Patel was like Smith or Jones in India. My cardiologist last name is Patel. Quite a few Indian docs in this area are named Patel.
