Am unfamiliar with your "difficult" theory. It is clear to me based on the news provided that he had no trouble cutting away and was falling for some good amount of time under a reserve that was streaming (partially deployed). So arguably he neither ran out of time or altitude, he ran out of functioning equipment.

What makes it more painful is that if he had landed in the river (as the news report tells us) with the streamer's slower rate of descent while in basically a head-up/ feet-first attitude, he was certainly trained for such and may have survived.

One can think of several other scenarios that render all of the above incorrect.

I am an experienced parachutist and fortunately never suffered a partial malfunction. They do not train to land under a streamer. Release the main, open the reserve.
