How He Used Facebook to Win
The New York Review of Books ^ | The June 8th, 2017 Issue | Sue Halpern

Not long after Donald Trump’s surprising presidential victory, an article published in the Swiss weekly Das Magazin, and reprinted online in English by Vice, began churning through the Internet. While pundits were dissecting the collapse of Hillary Clinton’s campaign, the journalists for Das Magazin, Hannes Grassegger and Mikael Krogerus, pointed to an entirely different explanation—the work of Cambridge Analytica, a data science firm created by a British company with deep ties to the British and American defense industries.

According to Grassegger and Krogerus, Cambridge Analytica had used psychological data culled from Facebook, paired with vast amounts of consumer information purchased from data-mining companies, to develop algorithms that were supposedly able to identify the psychological makeup of every voter in the American electorate. The company then developed political messages tailored to appeal to the emotions of each one. As the New York Times reporters Nicholas Confessore and Danny Hakim described it:

A voter deemed neurotic might be shown a gun-rights commercial featuring burglars breaking into a home, rather than a defense of the Second Amendment; political ads warning of the dangers posed by the Islamic State could be targeted directly at voters prone to anxiety….

Twitter was very valuable in getting our message out.

Expect facebook, twitter and anyone else to tighten their rules so they can kick just about anybody out and stop any conversation.

But I doubt Twitter will block the POTUS’ account :)

It wasn’t Facebook, Twitter, or any of those...all they did was echo his live appearances.

He held rallies in just the right places, at just the right times, and the People there liked him.

And the RUSSIANS had nothing to do with it.

Contrast his stadium filled appearances to hillarys backyard bombs, and the contrast should not need explaining, not even to the dumbest liberal out there.

Facebook elected Trump.

Twitter elected Trump.

Old, out-of-touch democrats with a flawed message that alienated young voters elected Trump.

White nationalists elected Trump.

The Russians ransacking Hillary’s computer files and strategically leaking the truth elected Trump.

Hatred of Hillary Clinton at the FBI (how could anyone hate a lovable woman like Hillary?) elected Trump.

FBI investigation elected Trump.

Email scandal elected Trump.

Black voters not liking Hillary elected Trump.

Fewer than 100,000 deplorable voters spread across a handful of states elected Trump.

FBI Director Comey announcing a criminal investigation into Hillary’s felonies just over a week before the election, when he had little reason to think there was anything there, elected Trump.

People hating Hillary because she is so professional, so polished, such a wonderful lawyer, so brilliant, so good, so righteous, and so much better than us elected Trump.

The lack of energy among Hillary supporters and expectations of Hillary being the inevitable winner, because it was her turn, elected Trump.

Robby Mook selecting the wrong travel stops for Hillary and spending heavily in the wrong states elected Trump.

Hillary’s campaign team failing to hone her message and get voters to the polls elected Trump.

Bill Clinton’s appearance of an inappropriate meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch elected Trump.

Blatant sexism elected Trump.

Wikileaks elected Trump.

The ugly stew of racism elected Trump.

Hillary’s alleged lack of likability and claimed lack of trustworthiness elected Trump.

Self-hating women elected Trump.

Evangelical, Catholic, anti-marriage equality, and anti-choice social conservatives elected Trump.

Misogyny elected Trump.

Sinister outside forces elected Trump.

Whitelash elected Trump.

Democrat policies that favor the rich elected Trump.

Failure to talk to working-class white voters elected Trump.

Men elected Trump.

Lower-level FBI agents pressuring their Director (because that’s how professional relationships work) elected Trump.

Tim Kaine gave Hillary Virginia, but he also elected Trump.

White women elected Trump.

Racists elected Trump.

Sexists elected Trump.

Rural voters elected Trump.

The working class voting against their own interests elected Trump.

Fake news elected Trump.

Supermarket tabloids elected Trump.

Celebrity (The Apprentice) elected Trump.

White male resentment elected Trump.

Over-shaming Trump supporters elected Trump.

Rejecting Bernie elected Trump.

Reagan democrats elected Trump.

Gary Johnson and Jill Stein voters elected Trump.

Backlash against political correctness elected Trump.

There are many terrible reasons for President Trump’s victory, but there are two things that were not a factor. First, Hillary was the perfect candidate; nothing she did harmed her candidacy in any way. Second, President Trump was the worst candidate imaginable; nothing he did helped his candidacy at all, except with racists, sexists, bigots, and the rest of the basket of deplorables.

FR is my only social media. I wanted a strong leader with real-world experience who would challenge the system’s control.

All Trump needs from here on out is rallies, a select number of YT outlets and his Twitter. If the spiteful babies cancel his account or shadowban him, he can move to GAB and take 30M+ followers with him.

We’re a movement, not astroturf. His analytics might guess at our psychology, but we can opt in to any ad we chose. We’re also not one-dimensional, with multiple reasons for our views. We think for ourselves and I resent the implication I’m easily manipulated.

I’ll grudgingly approve if this sort of thing moves significant numbers of squishes.

Agree about his rallies.
I for one glad he’s like a Mad Scientist and going all around the twisted media. He’s very resourceful.

I never read or heard from a Hillary supporter that her trivial health glitch hurt her candidacy, and I don’t believe it for one moment.

Hillary was the perfect candidate; nothing she did harmed her candidacy in any way. Getting overheated on a somewhat warm day is normal, which is why she has so many handlers practiced at tossing her carcass around. Pushing through, even with pneumonia is normal - women are like that. Even after collapsing from pneumonia, women like Hillary bounce back and are fine in two hours.

In my opinion, one of the key moments in the race that sealed the victory for Donald Trump was his "because you'd be in jail" retort to Hillary during one of the debates.

(Hopefully that will come to pass.)

I'll be honest. For the last 3 weeks of the campaign I picked 1 battle ground state to blast public posts with true anti-Clinton and pro-Trump facts. I did it every day after work till 2 am. I picked Pennsylvania. Almost picked New Hampshire... I had a lot of fun : )

If those rallies weren’t covered he’d only get mileage with the people present; even the negative coverage helped him (and the enemedia bemoaned this trend). They’d dream up a story to slam him, and his ratings would climb higher.

Defining the media as a dishonest enemy was critical to his success.

This article is incoherent and dumb.

Folks here deconstructed all the pre-election polls, saw they had Obama level black turnout, adjusted them for normal (non Obama) black turnout, and predicted a Trump victory.

Detroit, Flint, Philadelphia, Milwaukee....

This is not rocket science.

Name the three TV political ads you can remember. Extra credit for 4. Here are mine in no particular order:

1. The Chinese professor explaining how they came to own the U.S.
2. The anti-Goldwater ad with the little girl picking flower petals that morphed into a count-down to atomic war.
3. The Bear in the woods “if there is a bear.”

All of them appealed to me on an emotional level as they were designed to do.

(I had a 4th but it escaped my mind when I started writing—danged old age creeping in)

Dukakis bobble-heading in the hatch of a tank.

Willie Horton compliments of Dukakis.

Of course I remember the Barry Goldwater nuke spot. It ran when I was 17 and every time I saw it, I laughed my ass off. My old man gave $10,000 to Goldwater in ‘64 when ten grand was real money.
