Can a guitar-strumming cowboy poet strike the first blow at the polls against President Donald Trump? Democrat Rob Quist reckons he can do just that, in Thursday's closely-watched special congressional election in Montana.
Quist croons at campaign rallies and writes poems for supporters. And as a first-time candidate for public office, the 69-year-old is running an unexpectedly tight race against a Republican businessman in Big Sky country.
The lead once enjoyed by Republican contender Greg Gianforte "has diminished in polling so much that it's miniscule," Jeremy Johnson, an associate professor of political science at Carroll College in the state capital Helena, told AFP.
All hat, no cattle.
This is Montana. Thwacking a reporter, and a foreign one at that, might help the GOP.

Those total Democrat humiliations by the Russians occurred right after DNC genius Tom Perez bragged Democrats would show that that “resistance to Trump” could be translated into electoral victories.
To add insult to injury, the Minnesota, Connecticut, Virginia Democrat losses are the states the Russians threw to Hillary in the 2016 presidential election.
Go figure.

The only way the Democrat could win in Montana is to play on the Democrat females emotions.

There is a real contest in the Montana Democrat Party between the “Old” Democrats in Butte and Helena and the female Democrats.
If the female Democrats feel that the “Old” Democrats are slighting them or not paying attention to them, then they just don’t vote and the Republican wins.

Right or wrong, Democrats feel that their station in life is determined by politics.
They vote to maintain what they consider to be an easy and prosperous lifestyle, or to gain that easy and prosperous lifestyle.
That means that they have their whole life invested in politics.
Now, people who think and feel that way will fight you to the death over politics.
They will fight until the winner is finally seated.
In Montana, former Democrat Brian Schweitzer bragged on camera about cheating and using physical intimidation in the election for John Tester that allowed the Democrats to pass Obamacare.
On camera in front of lawyers. And the lawyers laughed about it.
So Conservatives see politics as something of a contest while Democrats see politics as something that really affects their pocketbook.
