USAA Faces Customer Backlash After Canceling Ads on Troop Supporting Sean Hannity

USAA, an insurance, bank and financial services company that caters to active duty military, veterans and their families, is getting slammed by members after announcing on Twitter Wednesday night the company was withdrawing advertising on the Sean Hannity show in response to pressure from liberal activists trying to silence Hannity by cutting off his advertising base. It was not stated by USAA if they advertised on Hannity’s Fox News Channel show or his nationally syndicated radio show.

Hannity is a strong supporter of the military and veterans. He has a strong fan base among the military community.

The effort to drive Hannity off the air was promoted by Democratic Party front group Media Matters which posted a list of Hannity’s advertisers this week for liberals to complain to after Hannity pursued the unsolved 2016 murder of Democratic Party activist Seth Rich in Washington, D.C. and possible connections to Wikileaks.

As of early Thursday, seven companies have announced they are no longer advertising on Hannity’s show, according to Media Matters: Cars.com, Casper, Crowne Plaza, Leesa Sleep, Peloton, Ring.com and USAA.

A sample of the most common tweet from USAA on Hannity, “Thank you for reaching out to us. USAA advertises on news programs, but advertising on opinion shows is not in accordance with our policy.”

USAA posted a direct mention of Hannity in a reply to a poster claiming they are cancelling their accounts.

“You’ve ignored my messages USAA -all of my family’s banking and insurance is with you. We are an active duty family. We stand with Hannity…You reply to the left bots but not a member?! By Friday ALL of our stuff will be moved to Navy Fed and GEICO/ALL State/Nationwide, et al.”

USAA coldly replied, “We are no longer advertising in relation to Hannity. Thank you!”

Many others claiming to be USAA members chimed in to say they too were canceling their accounts with USAA.

GEICO came on one USAA thread to welcome potential new customers.

More accounts being closed, many after being with USAA for decades:

(snipped additional responses)

And Average Joe sums it up nicely, “How can a company who supports Vets who fought for our rights cave to silencing free speech. You ought to be ashamed”

(snip)

Hannity is scheduled to take a long Memorial Day weekend break starting Thursday. Will he have a show to return to next week? Will USAA have a customer base next week?

Time for me to research another insurance company (after 25 years with USAA). No use for cowards.

Let’s try that again (grrr cheap keyboards!)

I was once interviewed for a job there many, many years ago. The guy who interviewed me was a jerk when it was over. It was one of the most moronic interview I sat through and wasted my lunch hour having to drive out there and back, in the snow. Complete waste of time.

I never forgot that jerk’s name. Sounds like he was in good company. (he’s no longer with them)

Sounds like we need to change our patronage. Too bad, we have been doing business with them for decades.

The title of the company means nothing..........to cater to a group that will be brought personally to a creditor for being in the field and missing a payment date ( I experienced this myself ) The name means nothing ....more than likely retired military persons who focus business near bases and hide their greed behind the stars and stripes.

Oh boy, they disappoint me. But we won’t be going anywhere else. Our home, cars, and remodeling loan all came from USAA.

There is no better bank or insurance company on the planet.

It would be a real shame if several claims had to be paid out before the cancellations.

Nice job, Kristinn. I see by the tweets that USAA contradicts itself, saying advertising on opinion shows is out of policy but elsewhere saying they are no longer advertising on Hannity.

Yet another company demonstrates their complete misunderstanding of their customer base.

Been a USAA member for 43 years. Used to be a well managed company.

“Leadership” at USAA is now comprised of hack retired generals and colonels who think they are more important than the members.

(I wouldn’t follow most of those guys/gals out of a burning building, much less into combat).

There are too many advertisers leaving Hannity for us to effectively boycott like we did Target. Particularly since Fox is getting unattractive in general and losing viewership faster than Hannity is losing advertisers.

We need another plan, and maybe Hannity can get some help from the WH. Hannity should be eyeing his exit--Fox will be doing worse than this to him in the near future.

That said, I am dismayed at USAA.
