Estimated 23 million would lose health insurance under Republican bill: CBO

WASHINGTON - An estimated 23 million people would lose health coverage by 2026 under Republican legislation aimed at repealing Obamacare, a nonpartisan congressional agency said on Wednesday in the first calculation of the new bill's potential impact.

The report from the Congressional Budget Office also said federal deficits would fall by $119 billion between 2017 and 2026 under the bill, which was approved this month by the Republican-dominated House of Representatives. The CBO score raises the stakes for Republican senators now working on their own version of the legislation.

House Republicans came under sharp criticism for passing the bill before the CBO could make its assessment. The Trump administration already has relied on the House bill's healthcare spending cuts in its proposed federal budget.

The bill is called the American Health Care Act and it would fulfill a long-running Republican goal - repealing and replacing much of former President Barack Obama's 2010 Affordable Care Act, commonly called Obamacare. President Donald Trump, who made replacing Obamacare a key campaign promise in 2016, and other Republicans say it is too costly and creates unwarranted government interference in healthcare decisions.

Congress is aiming to pass the bill under a process called reconciliation, which requires only a simple majority of votes in the Senate, where Republicans hold a 52-48 majority, instead of 60 votes. Under those rules, all elements of the bill must have a direct budgetary impact or else they must be stricken from the legislation.

The CBO said federal deficits would fall by $119 billion between 2017 and 2026 under the Republican bill. The House bill would eliminate most Obamacare taxes that help subsidize private health coverage for individuals, roll back the government's Medicaid health plan for the poor and disabled and replace the law's income-based tax credits...

Unless Trump's media team is going to counter this narrative, promote the bill, explain why their bill is better than Obamacare, and show people suffering under Obamacare, I think they should just let Obamacare collapse. If something is completely broken, people will clamor for it to be fixed. However, Obamacare actually more popular based on polling than this bill (part of it could be lack of promotion). As soon as this is passed, the Republicans will own healthcare. The blame will be theirs, and the Democrats and media will have a field day finding every sad case they can and running it. The nature of healthcare is that you can't please all of the people. The Dems lost over 1,000 seats nationwide over their healthcare. The Dems and media say Obamacare is going swimmingly, so let them own it.

other than for military, veterans and employees perhaps, the federal govt has NO BUSINESS in the health insurance business! NONE!

and it works like krap anyway for the feds to try to do it just look at the lousy VA with some of our honored vets dying in the dirty hallways or on waiting lists to be seen

How many million would drop the “healthcare insurance” they have now which has deductibles so high that they can never file a claim?

Why should the Republicans own Health Care if this bill passes? The democraps refuse to own all the downsides of Obamacare by denying there are any downsides. People need to understand that Health Insurance is NOT Health Care.

I’m still waiting for Obama’s promised $2,500 savings. Instead I now have a $5,000 deductible and “insurance” that essentially pays for nothing.

Oh Dear God - the propaganda is again so thick, you need rubber boots to get through it.

I was one of the “20 million insured” through Obamacare. Why? Because in 2013, my state cancelled my insurance program under the new Obamacare rules. So I had to go on the exchange and sign up for a more-expensive plan. I had to do it again the next year when the state health co-op went bankrupt. YET - the propogandists counted me as someone “insured by Obamacare.”

Lying bastards.

Single payer would be pushed.

But outside of bandaids and broken bones and pills, why should someone be gifted with free health insurance unless elderly or massively disabled?

The problem is that no one gets to hear stories like yours because the Democrats pretend people like you don’t exist, the media ignores you, and Trump’s media team is not fighting back against the left properly. Trump’s media team & the GOP need to be constantly spotlighting cases like this be it at a rally, at a press conference, via streaming live a meeting, posting videos on Twitter, etc.

Why should the CBO be trusted any more than Congress is trusted?

Sure they will, and if Trump and the Republicans want this, they have to promote the heck out of it and get people on board. They haven’t done that as Obamacare actually became more popular than this bill.

Nice trick given that around 12 million people got Obamacare. To get 20 million, the CBO has to assume that people would be kicked off Medicaid and and their parents’ insurance, etc. Pretty fake number even by Swamp standards.

Most of those losing "health insurance" have ALWAYS had healthcare. Anybody can walk into an emergency room and get healthcare. Medicaid can be had by just about anybody claiming they need it.

The media, as usual LYING.

out of that 23 million, I think I heard that 16+ million would be because people would voluntarily opt out if mandates were eliminated. But I guess 23 sounds more MSM dramatic than 7 ;)

The Republicans bill is not going to pass. And it shouldn’t. Their best option is to leave Obamacare in place, get rid of the mandates in a new bill that also states that American citizens can buy any insurance they want. Then stand back and watch the insurance companies go to work to offer insurance that people actually want....just like they did before. And watch Obamacare implode.
It’s really that simple if the stupid Republicans didn’t think they can run Obamacare better than the Democrats. That’s what their bill does.
