Cities with Confederate history are debating whether or not to remove Civil War monuments in places like picturesque Monument Avenue that is lined with statues for Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, Thomas Stonewall Jackson and J.E.B. Stuart. Citizens are asking the question in Richmond - do you think Richmond should remove its Confederate monuments?
Sure, when they get rid of all the Martin Luther King memorials, statues, street names, etc. Then it would be a level playing field. I feel so “uncomfortable” knowing there are Martin Luther King statues around.
Keep the generals. Dump Jeff Davis.
And while we’re at it, strip Robt. Byrd from every building, road, park, bridge and outhouse that bears the old Cyclops’ name.
Hell no!
How do we know where we are going if we do not know where we came from? History is our starting point, and that cannot be changed.
I voted NO. Used to live by Cold Harbor Battlefield outside of Richmond. Loved to visit the sites of history all around, and the statues and cemeteries were a part of that. All this is is an attempt to blot out history. Enough is enough.

Done. NO in the lead: 725 to 290.
Posted on a similar thread:
They are statues - no one is worshipping them. They are a record of the past, good and bad. Helping to remind us of who we were and who we are as a Nation.
Before modern photography and sound recording, history was documented in sculpture, paintings and the written word.
Destroying historical works should be illegal. Wait until these fiends find out there are similar artifacts and portraits in museums and galleries - will they destroy those too?
Book burning next? God help us.
So you remove “Confederate” symbols of the past in an effort to rewrite the past. Before the Civil War they were slaves, is this what they really want to go back to? So lets erase slavery and go a step back to before slavery and they were in Africa. Do they really want to be Africans? What about the Irish and others that were not free? Do they get relocated to their homeland also?
Why?
Alabama just passed a law that “prohibits the relocation, removal, alteration, renaming, or other disturbance of any architecturally significant building, memorial building, memorial street, or monument that has stood on public property for 40 or more years. Changes to the names of memorials installed between 20 and 40 years ago will need permission from a state commission. The legislation also applies to schools named to memorialize people.
Hurrah for Alabama! War Eagle!
Done. NO is way ahead.
Not only no but . . . Hell No!!!
Destroying historic monuments reminds me of the Bolsheviks after the Russian Civil War and of Orwell's 1984.
Attacks on our history will not stop with Confederate monuments. Will George Washington be next?
A disgrace to destroy and deny our history. I blame at least partially Nikki Haley. How smug this nut-job was when she blamed the Confederate battle flag for causing homicides.
BUMP!
Dummies must’ve got the word out. Several thousand votes cast now and Yes is making up a lot of ground....
i thought Monument Ave could not be touched because it is on the Nat’l Historic Places list. I guess they could change the rule. Monument Ave brings in a lot of tourists. Stately homes set far back from the avenue. Something to behold
What I wonder about are the homes “on the other side of the track”. In my little hometown in the South, AA lived in their own community. Terrible homes compared to “the whites” on “the right side of the town”. Their homes were on dirt roads, the homes not painted. The people in the homes took good care of them - clean, neat. Few of the people had cars; in fact we didn’t have car for several yrs.
But I’ve often wondered why my little hometown which has made practically the whole town “the Historic District” does not make “colored town” a Historic District too. To me, it is very sad to see these homes, but it is our history. It is our past. And in a big way, I do not want to be reminded of that past. I have just wondered about these things. Perhaps there are towns that have made AA communities part of their history. I’m not sure anyone white or black would want to tour a “colored town” Historical District.
I just voted again and saw NO is way ahead.
