The idea is to force as many federal workers into leaving or retiring before the cuts are implemented. It helps drain the swamp.

An April CBO report found that benefits for the government’s civilian workers were 47 percent higher, on average, than for comparable private-sector workers...

And how in the Fk is that possible or remotely fair?

When I was young (50-60’s), jobs in the Government didn’t pay nearly what the private sector paid, but the benefits were better. Too many years of Left Governing and the pay has far exceeded the private sector AND the benefits are out of sight. Time to rein in what our Government employees get and let the fair market determine what they are actually worth.

Indeed, a better reform would be to phase out DB benefits for federal workers altogether.

I would assume that would include members of Congress? And how about the President? After all, 100% of salary after a maximum of 8 years work along with fully paid healthcare is far better than the average pension in private industry.

especially since those favored few also have much higher job security than the rest of us.

Especially since a very large percentage of them don't do anything but show up once in a while and collect a check.

If the average citizen had any idea what most fedgov "employees" do all day all hell would break loose.

Also, is the CATO Institute also talking about military pensions when they’re calling for cuts? I don’t think most people would agree with that.

Cut government workers and the market will be flooded with unskilled workers to replace the illegal immigrants.

Here are some things to consider with federal civilian employees:

1. Step Increases - Mandatory increases to pay based on years at the job. “I’m a General Schedule (GS) 12, Step 4.” They only talk about the increases in the funding acts.

2. Desk Audits - Employees request these to raise their General Schedule (GS) level. “I was a GS-11, but after the Desk Audit, I’m now a GS-12.”

3. Bonuses - Bonuses given by one government employee to another government employee.

For a free country, this is a disgrace.

I know the anti-federal government crowd are going to start taking their shots. In a way, they are right in doing so. I've seen so much waste in the federal government I'd probably be a star witness if ever asked to testify.

But I want to make something perfectly clear. Though there are those who have abused the federal pension system, there are those of us who work for Uncle Sam for meager wages with little to no recognition for our efforts. People say that perhaps 1 in 5 actually do any work, well, I'm that "1," as are many others I know and associate with.

I've been fortunate enough to now work in a building where people appreciate the work I do for them. I don't get paid any more than I used to, but the recognition goes a long way towards soothing the anger that comes with being relegated to a low paid support staff role, though I have two IT degrees and three certifications.

I say all this to say, "don't throw the baby out with the bath water." Keep in mind that there are hard working people in the federal system who do not and will not make lots of money and who will receive a meager retirement when we do reach the age when we can do so.

The Establishment has been pitting us against each other — poor vs. wealthy. I had been praying for a leader to aim the scissors at the very source of our problems — BIG govt with its BIG perks.

We all know that Federal Workers are much different than those lowly Private Sector Workers. The comparison isn’t even close.

They are just better People overall. They are smarter, more deserving and they work so much harder than those stinky Private Sector types.

Really, it’s true.
