UN panel releases draft treaty banning possession and use of nuclear weapons

A United Nations-backed panel has publicly released a draft treaty banning the possession and use of all nuclear weapons.

The draft treaty is the culmination of a sustained campaign, supported by more than 130 non-nuclear states frustrated with the sclerotic pace of disarmament, to prohibit nuclear weapons and persuade nuclear-armed states to disarm.

Nine countries are known or believed to possess nuclear weapons: the US, UK, Russia, China, France, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel. None has supported the draft plan.

The draft treaty obliges state parties to “never under any circumstances … develop, produce, manufacture, otherwise acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices … use nuclear weapons … [or] carry out any nuclear weapon test”.

States would also be obliged to destroy any nuclear weapons they possess and would be forbidden from transferring nuclear weapons to any other recipient.

Costa Rica’s ambassador to the UN, Elayne Whyte Gómez, who chaired the treaty drafting conference, said she expected revisions and there was “a good level of convergence among the delegations, especially on the core prohibitions”.

Comrade obama would have signed that preemptively.

If asked about the effective impact the UN has on the world, I’d mention its legitimacy of states that sponsor terrorism.

Honestly, in a world devoid of nuclear weapons, the US becomes even more of a Hegemon.

Here's an interesting lesson from the past on international peace agreements:

The Kellogg-Briand Pact, also known as the Pact of Paris, was a treaty that attempted to outlaw war. The treaty was drafted by France and the United States, and on August 27, 1928, was signed by fifteen nations. By 1933 sixty-five nations had pledged to observe its provisions.

Kellogg-Briand contained no sanctions against countries that might breach its provisions. Instead, the treaty was based on the hope that diplomacy and the weight of world opinion would be powerful enough to prevent nations from resorting to the use of force. This soon proved to be a false hope; though Germany, Italy, and Japan were all signatories, the treaty did not prevent them from committing aggressions that led to world war II.

The United Nations is a jobs program for otherwise unemployable elitists. This nonsense is intellectual self abuse.

Not to mention the USSR was also a signatory and soon invaded Finland, just for the hell of it....

The chimera of eliminating nuclear weapons is a foolish dream. While particular countries such as North Korea and Iran MUST be prevented from further developing and deploying nukes & missiles, the idea that the US and Europe would be made more secure by trusting in “a world without nuclear weapons” is simply foolish.

Tell it to the Norks. I’m sure they will comply to a stern resolution.

Seriously, could the UN be more irrelevant?
