I recall being surprised in the mid 90's leaving San Pedro on the Avalon ferry, seeing the USCG cutter tied up at the station. It had a Phalanx CIWS mounted on the aft superstructure. This was a late model cutter, not an old destroyer.
Still wonder, why the CG needed a CIWS? Could see it in the Gulf of mexico for druggies, but SoCal?

The incredibly well funded drug, human and weapons running operations had/has rockets according to multiple intel sources, cross-checked. It's just a matter of time before one of them fires off in resistance.
