629,000 Overstayed U.S. Visas Last Year, Homeland Security Says
New York Times ^ | MAY 22, 2017 | RON NIXON

Posted on 05/22/2017 2:05:01 PM PDT by reaganaut1

WASHINGTON — An estimated 629,000 visitors to the United States — just over 1 percent of all travelers — remained in the county at the end of last year after overstaying their visas as students, workers or tourists, according to a report released on Monday by the Department of Homeland Security.

Although the figure represents a tiny portion of the estimated 50 million visitors to the country, Homeland Security officials say the failure of some people to leave when their visas lapse presents a national security risk. Two of the Sept. 11 hijackers, Satam al-Suqami and Nawaq Alhazmi, had overstayed their visas.

The report, just the second issued in the last 20 years despite being required annually by law, tracked overstays by citizens of countries that require a visa and of the three dozen or so countries, mostly in Europe, that participate in the visa-waiver program, which allows their citizens to visit the United States without a visa on trips of 90 days or less.

The highest rates of overstays were from countries outside the visa-waiver program. For example, 13 percent of the visitors from Afghanistan overstayed their visas, while nearly 11 percent of those from Iraq overstayed. The highest rates of overstays were from African countries. A quarter of all visitors from Burkina Faso and Djibouti overstayed their tourist or business visa.

European countries like France and Germany, which are exempt under the visa-waiver program, had lower overall rates of people overstaying their visas, less than 1 percent.

So under Trump the legally required report is being issued, while it almost never was under Bush and Obama? Trump has a big mouth, but who is the one following the law in this case?

We should reduce the number of visas given to countries with high fractions of visa overstayers, and/or make visitors from those countries to post the equivalent of bail.

That number is about double what used to be the TOTAL number for immigration up until about 1970, and those were people primarily from Europe, not charming thugocracies like Burkina Faso.

“629,000 Overstayed U.S. Visas Last Year, Homeland Security Says”

And you’re a “hateful, xenophobic bigot” if you say so.

How many people come here on 6 month tourist or other visas but work illegally? They go home twice per year for a quick visit so they are not ‘overstayers’ but they are violating the terms of their visas.

The US issues over 10 million visas a year, of various types. It’s not at all hard to believe that a half-million a year become illegal aliens as a result of this alone. I’d be surprised if the number was actually that small.

A million legal immigrants plus a half-million illegals each year is 3-4 million new Democrat voters by the next presidential election.

A B-2 tourist visa is good for six months which is the time aliens have to find an American citizen spouse that will then move them to the top of the Lawful Permanent Resident (Green Card) list. Plus they can become citizens after only 3 years of marital residence instead of five years.
My next door neighbors are in such a marriage. Recently the Mexican In-laws applied for visas for their first trip to the U.S. from Guadalajara. The Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) officer asked them how many children they had, they answered and then the officer said: “and one of them is illegal, right?” They said yes; they had been told to never lie to CIS and CIS already knew that a child was in the U.S. as an illegal alien.

Yes, what you said. Next I want to see the statistics on how many are deported and banned from re-entry for life.

In Singapore, when you enter as a non-citizen, before you clear customs you have to show your RETURN TRIP ticket.

So the NYT who is in favor of unchecked illegal immigration is suddenly worried about those overstaying their Visas?
