JERUSALEM (AP) -- President Donald Trump has cast the elusive pursuit of peace between Israelis and Palestinians as the "ultimate deal." But he will step foot in Israel having offered few indications of how he plans to achieve what so many of his predecessors could not.
Trump has handed son-in-law Jared Kushner and longtime business lawyer Jason Greenblatt the assignment of charting the course toward a peace process. The White House-driven effort is a sharp shift from the practice of previous U.S. administrations that typically gave secretaries of state those responsibilities.
Kushner and Greenblatt were to accompany Trump on his two-day visit, set to begin Monday and include separate meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Trump also planned to visit the Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem and the Western Wall, an important Jewish holy site.
On the eve of Trump's visit, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Security Cabinet approved several confidence-building measures, including construction permits for Palestinians near their cities in parts of the West Bank that had previously been off limits, a senior official said. Under interim agreements 60 percent of the West Bank, known as Area C, site of Israel's settlements, is under Israeli control and Palestinian development there has mostly been forbidden by Israel.
Speaking on condition of anonymity in line with protocol, he said the package also includes economic concessions and opening the border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan.
White House aides have played down expectations for significant progress on the peace process during Trump's stop, casting it as more symbolic than substantive. Yet Trump may still need to engage in some delicate diplomacy following revelations that he disclosed highly classified intelligence Israel obtained about the Islamic State group with top Russian officials, without Israel's permission.

Hehe.
It's my guess that the AP is more upset about the disclosure than Israel will be.
Now that was a real WELCOME!
Back in the 70s Raphael Patai called the Arab-Israeli conflict the most mediated conflict in world history and offered all sorts of data to back that up. This was before Camp David. Since then the amount of outside attempts at mediation have only increased.
The truth is this is an unsolvable problem. To be blunt, everyone who isn’t Jewish can see that.
oops, they found one. The US isn’t the only place with folks thinking they’re special. The ministers want to personally shake Trump’s hand sooooo bad they were willing to boycott if they couldn’t - until Netanyahu put his foot down:
I understand that Bibi is going to roll out the red carpet for President Trump. All high ranking government officials will meet him at the airport. Hehehehehe
I read that the only ones upset about that is the media.

It probably is.
But I’m willing to give Trump a chance to do what he does best.
If nothing else, he should be able to buy Israel some extra breathing room for a while
I’m expecting some success in certain aspects of the situation. Several of the former agitating countries are aligning against Iran. This is the leverage Trump can use to make some kind of deal. Israel is developing some decent friendships with former foes, especially as ME concerns over Iranian nukes increase.
Next summit for Trump will be the far East(Tokyo?) to find a solution of the mess in China and N.K.
I think DJT has the best shot at solving the problem in a long time. And, I think the seeds of the solution lie right here in the USA.
The real issue is that oil wealth has allowed mohammedan countries to exhibit intransigence toward Israel. The fracking innovation in the US is going to allow us to bankrupt these countries, along the lines of how Reagan beat the Soviet Union.
By allowing fracking on federal land, and offshore oil development on the east coast, Trump can increase the US supply of oil to the point where the mohammedan oil countries are going to have some stark choices. Their people have become accustomed to a life of ease based on government handouts supported by oil revenue. We can bring this gravy train to a halt, or at least a major slowdown.
Subsidies to non-oil countries are going to come under huge pressure.
And the only savior around is going to be Uncle Sam, with trade deals that can stave off poverty and social unrest.
But, the price of these things is going to be making nice with Israel and the US.
Egypt and Saudi Arabia are already almost on board. A couple more and we can split the mohammedan world in half, with the halves at each other's throats, and Israel aligned with the same side as the US. If we make sure that our side has a stronger military this situation can persist for a long time.
When the Romans sowed the seed of this issue by dispersing the Jews, that lasted for 1900 years. Note that the Jews didn't particularly like this. If we can get other countries to absorb the Palestinians, at least semi-willingly, that solution may stick for at least a few centuries.
Think about it; this all comes back to putting economic pressure on the mohammedans by increasing the supply of oil. Obama could not do this because he was ideologically opposed to oil. DJT is a businessman and is used to wielding the weapons of business. I think the more astute Saudis know what is coming, but either embrace it because it will personally enrich them, or don't know how to defend against it.
If you'd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.

Oh boy, all we need is a 7 year peace deal.
Sad but there is a long History...in the Bible.
Well, if it’s God’s plan then there’s nothing we can do to stop it.
But I’m not going to choose dates. Only the Father knows when Jesus will return, not any of us.
