[State of] Washington loses fight, might pay up to $2B to save salmon

SEATTLE (AP) - Washington state lost a major legal battle Friday, which could force it spend nearly $2 billion to restore salmon habitat by removing barriers that block fish migration.

A panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last year affirmed a lower court’s 2013 ruling ordering the state to fix or replace hundreds of culverts - large pipes that allow streams to pass beneath roads but block migrating salmon.

Idaho and Montana joined Washington state in asking the appeals court to reconsider the case.

Washington had sought a rehearing, arguing in part that the court’s decision forces the state to spend billions to replace culverts that in some cases wouldn’t have an impact on salmon because other there were other barriers upstream or downstream that completely block salmon. It also said the decision would have broad implications for other land and water use management in the Northwest.

“Ordering a State to spend money on something that will make no difference is an abuse of discretion,” the state argued in asking for another hearing.

The city of Seattle blocks salmon migration.

Move it.

To Oregon.

Get sea lions out of the Columbia River. They go all the way up to Bonniville Dam to eat salmon schooling under the fish ladders. Also get Indian gill nets out of the rest of the rivers. The bastards used to net from bank to bank when the salmon and steelhead are running.

and at the same time they dumped massive log dumps into the river for salmon habitat that block the rivers for fishing and recreation of all kinds.

Yes! What comes around goes around. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of corrupt clowns.

The WA Dept of Fisheries has long had a war on salmon making some strains them extinct simply because they are a “thorn in their side” (actual quote), while selling eyed-eggs (illegal by their own statues) around the world (Chile, Australia, France, etc) to fish farms and blaming commercial salmon fishermen for the loss (stocking the Great Lakes with Skagit River Coho and Chinnok). Monies from these sales go into the WA State General Fund and into the pockets of hatchery managers. In short, managing salmon in WA State is a state run racket.

I’ll bet even the most cursory investigation would reveal that this whole situation was designed and implemented from the very beginning to have exactly this kind of court decision.
