James Comey rejects invitation to testify before Senate Intelligence Committee

Former FBI director James Comey has rejected an invitation to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee next week.

Comey, who was fired on Tuesday by President Trump, was invited for a closed session before the panel by Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Vice Chairman Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va.

Warner said on MSNBC Friday afternoon that Comey would not appear before the committee on Tuesday. Burr's office confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Comey would not meet with the committee behind closed doors next week.

"It is our hope in the not-too-distant future that we can find a time for [Comey] to come in and talk to our Committee," Warner said on MSNBC.

Comey was leading the FBI's investigation into Russia's interference with the 2016 presidential election and alleged coordination with the Trump campaign before he was fired.

The closed session would have been Comey's first since his White House departure, and would have been a chance for him to tell lawmakers more details surrounding the FBI's ongoing investigation, and his sudden firing.

Comey's decision not to meet with the panel comes after a Friday tweet by Trump in which he issued a warning to the ousted FBI head. Comey "better hope that there are no 'tapes' of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" the president wrote in a tweet.

There’s a catch to immunity. You still can’t lie or cover up the truth. That invalidates your immunity.

Leading is rather misleading.....He is the "can we make a case person" as the paperwork comes in.

The problem is with the Hillary decision was that he made it solely on his own with no rhyme or reason when he said "no one would prosecute" her. That was NOT his call.

Eventually Comey will be questioned under oath how Obama/Lynch and their commissars (McCabe) at FBI acted to pressure Comey not to recommend a Clinton indictment.

The Democrats and media (is there a difference?) have got this wrong. This is not the beginning of the end for Trump.

I think this will play out similar to Reagan's firing of the air traffic controllers. The exercise of power to fire the guy no one thought could be fired will cause a lot of people to rethink how they want to deal with Trump.

That’s why there are no tapes or video of the Hillary “interview” ... to give her the cover of the FBIer having a bad recollection or his notes are too sketchy to really know if she lied...

do you really think the Dem really want to offer Comey immunity?..He could spill so much stuff on them

I telling you Comey on again off again investigation of Hillary was his blackmailing her ...he had the good on her and she bribed him or made promises

Remember Trump new to DC... Comey was corrupt and playing games with the other corrupt in DC...Hillary, Obama, maybe McCain for years..

If Comey start spilling the beans with immunity offer God knows how many people are gonna go down ...

Comey flipping would be like dumping Agent Orange on the swamp

Really if I was Comey right now I would worry about Arkansaside

The powers that be Would-be highly motivated and they would blame it on Trump

DC is like the Mob and Comey was on the played

The scumbags fried Scooter Libby over a trivial conflict of recollections with a churnalist who could just as well have been wrong as Libby (almost certain that the churnalist was wrong). Yet they let Shrillary skate over so many lies and issues while they refused to pin her down or take recorded testimony. The bias and dishonesty of so many in and out of govt is blatant and scandalous.

Burr and Warner are Comey’s allies.

They were hoping to get some grist from Comey in their hearing which they could then leak to the NYT, WAPO, etc. against Trump.

Something like Comey’s apparent claim in the NYT that Trump demanded a personal loyalty pledge like some dictator.

But if conversations with POTUS are memorialized on recording devices, then Comey would be exposing himself to a perjury conviction if he repeats in his testimony something he claims was said in his conversation with POTUS that wasn’t true.

So no surprise Comey declined to attend, even though it was being chaired by his allies.

Laura Ingram made a good point on Fox this afternoon about Comey declining the invitation to testify.

She said he had no problem speaking out in July 2016 and again in October 2016 about Hillary's emails and he's testified in front of Congress many times.

Why, she asked, is the cat got Comey's tongue now? Why is he clamming up all of the sudden?

Does Trump have Comey caught in a trap and he knows the gig is up? Just my speculation.
