Then when the ransomware people call you, you can waste their time and laugh at them

About six months ago I had a window pop up on my computer screen.
It stated I had an infection and must contact them to get it fixed.
I don’t remember exactly what I did at the time, but it wound up with me either closing the window or simply turning my computer off.
I rebooted in safe mode. It booted up. I shut down again, and started he machine like normal.
It booted up and I didn’t see any residual effects.
Don’t know if I just got lucky or what, but it seemed to work.
Months later I haven’t seen any evidence of a problem.
Who did it? North Korea?
Full system image copy monthly - keep last six versions.
Nightly data only backups - keep 14 versions (not counting the monthly version).
It hard drive fails, you lose at most, one days data changes and whatever system changes in the last 30 days or less. Same if ransomware appears. Running an important computer, like my home one where I keep invaluable spreadsheets and information must be backed up systematically or you will at some point pay the heavy price of permanent data loss and massive time loss rebuilding your computer programs.
