Donald Trump lobbed a veiled threat at the former FBI director on Friday, hinting that some of their conversations before his firing may have been recorded.
'James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!' the president tweeted.
It's unclear whether Trump was warning that the White House is recording his calls, or if he believes the FBI may have been recording Comey's.
Trump said Thursday during an interview with NBC News that the two men have spoken at least three times since Inauguration Day.

If he doesn’t have or know about tapes, it is quite a bluff. Got to think that he knows about tapes made and kept, prepared to use them. Needs to get McCabe and other leftovers out.

I hope there are no tapes. All I can think about here are the “secret white house tapes” from the Nixon years. I do not want any comparison to that era. This is a much more contrived attack on the president and if we go down that path, along with the wrangling over what is going to released, we will end up with a special prosecutor, a grand jury, and a loss of the white house in 2020 as the media piles onto NOTHING but makes it look like we have Nero running the government.
Look at it this way, how many of the GOP in the senate are coming to his aid: Grasley, maybe that guy Kennedy from La.
and even Cruz. Not counting the dems whom we know are devils incarnate, we can add McPain, Linda Graham, Collins and a few others to the dems side. McConnell at best is a wash albeit he is the majority leader. The rest of the GOP is mostly silent.
The "veiled threat" was the implication that Trump would defend himself, not the existence or not of recordings.
Admiral Mike Rogers runs the NSA. The NSA records everything. The President can ask Mike Rogers to let him listen to anything the NSA has recorded.
The New World Order, Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama set this up for the coming Beast State. Now Donald Trump has the controls for a little while. This will get really interesting before if gets really supernatural! ;-)

It sounds to me like the administration either suspects that Comey will being acting out against him, or perhaps even that Comey openly threatened to.
Obviously, if true, this can be interpreted two ways (probably depends on your side of the aisle): Comey was trying to strong arm the administration, or was involved in some kind of power play, or he feels he has something on the administration that needs to come out but wasn’t ready to make it actionable.
NO tapes are needed. The mere threat is enough. Checkmate.

Jeff Sessions as Trump’s ag could have asked our Brit Allies at their DCHQ to surveil Obama, Rice, Clapper, Brennan and Comey.
No FISA Warrant was/is needed. The New DCHQ would inform Admiral Rodgers of his nees. Then DCHQ could access NSA files in Utah or wherever on Comey and who ever he was planning sedition with.
So any conversation that Comey had could be reproduced as you noted. Comedy knows this, and Comey knows that Trump knows how to do this as Potus.
Comey was fired while he was in LA without any leaks or warnings. So, he didn’t have time to do an Illiarily Clinton bleach or shredding job with his computers, files, videos, and any tapes, that were in his FBI office before he was fired by Trump.
The “Tapes” which Trump referred to, and our pearl clutchers as usual suffered a severe case of hypoxia caused by vapors. They passed out and banged heads on their key boards, moaning “Oh No!”
Those “tapes” were never in Trump’s hands, his offices. If they are around, Jeff Sessions has them locked up at the DOJ with copies at the DCHQ and NSA.
