South Korea Elects Moon Jae-in, Who Backs Talks With North, as President

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea elected Moon Jae-in, a human rights lawyer who favors dialogue with North Korea, as president on Tuesday, returning the nation’s liberals to power after nearly a decade in the political wilderness and setting up a potential rift with the United States over the North’s nuclear weapons program.

His victory caps a remarkable national drama in which a corruption scandal, mass protests and impeachment forced a South Korean president from office for the first time in almost 60 years, leaving the conservative establishment in disarray and its former leader in jail.

Mr. Moon, 64, a son of North Korean refugees, faces the challenge of enacting changes to limit the power of big business and address the abuses uncovered in his predecessor’s downfall. He must also make good on his promise of a new approach to North Korea while balancing relations with the United States and China.

His election also scrambles the geopolitics over North Korea’s nuclear arsenal. Even as the Trump administration urges the world to step up pressure on Pyongyang, it now faces the prospect of a critical ally — one with the most at stake in any conflict with the North — breaking ranks and adopting a more conciliatory approach.

This may complicate our attempts to pressure North Korea and China into a solution short of a military strike.

Another weak loser wins an election.

Representative democracy is truly the worst form of government, except for all the others.

Our military buildup was not done to kick the can down the road. Any change of direction insisted on by the South should be met with a TOTAL pullout.

Talking... it’s always talking...

Great if it develops into results, but since the mid 1990s, we’ve gotten no results.

There comes a time when the talking is over.

I’d say a good time would be before North Korean nukes and long range missiles are perfected.

The South can pound sand. We have to think about Hawaii, Alaska and our West coast.

If this idiot sets of an EMP high enough, he could cause massive problems for the United States and China.

If he was a psychopath he woulda nuked someone, or started a war with SK.

He’s definitely NOT a psychopath.

If the South Koreans want liberal pacifism, then we should withdraw every last one of our forces in Korea, remove our THAAD installation, etc. and tell them “This is what you want. You’re on your own.” Then we should go about doing what we need to do to defend our own interests and let the South Koreans contemplate the error of their ways.

Park ruined the right wing of South Korea, they’re currently in shambles thanks to her bizarre cult activities.

This was all but guaranteed to have happened.

What makes you think a psychopath can't think rationally and decide that making a move that would result in his annihilation isn't a good idea?

My point exactly.

So why ever use a nuke tipped ICBM?

He won’t. Just to threaten.

Okay but a psychopath is MORE likely to act rationally, but less, so I don’t think that the idea that a psychopath would start a nuclear war makes sense.
