Black graduate students at Harvard University will soon be a part of a first-of-its-kind ceremony.
On May 23, the prestigious university will hold an individual ceremony for black graduate students, according to a report by The Root. The ceremony, which took a year to plan, celebrates fellowship, not segregation, Michael Huggins, a graduate student who will receive a masters degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School this month, told The Root.
This is an opportunity to celebrate Harvards black excellence and black brilliance, Huggins told the online publication. Its an event where we can see each other and our parents and family can see us as a collective, whole group. A community.
More than 120 students have registered to partake in the ceremony, which will be held at Holmes Field, near the Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The students raised more than $27,000 to pay for the ceremony and a reception that will follow. The student body hopes to organize a similar ceremony for black undergraduate students at Harvard next year, Huggins said.

I’m so confused. Didn’t blacks want to be INTEGRATED (not segregated). I mean there used to be black and white water coolers and that whole bus thing.....
They should have their own water fountains too...
Will they get separate drinking fountains, too?
Need another graduation group for the Lesbians, Homosexuals and Trans.... and another graduation group for Muslims. And then have one that is whites only... Why not. Let;s push this agenda.
Thst’s segregation!!!
Giving white racists exactly what they want.
Good play, Harvard blacks!
Message to Whites :”Don’t try this”
Racists.
celebrates fellowship, not segregation,...
OH!!!!! Then it’s ok.
Get the #### out of here.
In phone booth?
welcome to the the United Negro State of America
I can only see this as a positive because so many families today do not seem to understand the statement “HOLD YOUR APPLAUSE UNTIL THE END OF THE CEREMONY”!!!
They get their own ‘special’ ceremony..........................isn’t that special....................
In fairness to future employers, and in keeping with the national movement for self-segregation, their diplomas should indicate that they passed the “black student curriculum”. Which means of course that they didn’t really learn anything of value at all.
Bad idea.
How about quit taking the white mans cash? Hey they want their own space, let us give it to them.
Nothing like a little racial division, eh? Now, if Harvard had insisted that blacks have a separate graduation ceremony from whites, you would never have heard the end of it. This is an absolutely ridiculous event and the fact that Harvard is playing along with it denigrates Harvard immeasurably. The only possible positive thing coming out of this is that the more surly blacks will probably be at this separate graduation ceremony and thus will not be at the main graduation ceremony to act out, stand up and turn their back on the featured speaker (like they did at my undergrad and grad graduation ceremonies) or otherwise disrupt a momentous event for others. And with such an attitude that, among other things, they are motivated to opt for a separate African graduation ceremony, I wonder how their job searches will be affected. Not that I care a whit, as anything negative will be 100% brought on themselves.
