Russia puts Europe on alert as Putin's warships enter waters after US destroyer swoops

THREE Russian warships have challenged Nato by entering Latvia's exclusive economic zone in the Baltic Sea, according to armed forces officials in Riga.

The corvettes - Liven 551, Serpukhov 603 and Morshansk 824 - were detected only four nautical miles from Latvian territorial waters.

It was the latest in a series of moves by Vladimir Putin's naval forces seen as testing the response of the small Baltic state, a NATO and EU member.

The move on Sunday was linked today to the arrival in the Baltic Sea of US warship, USS Carney, with cruise missiles on board.

The three Russian vessels had been deployed to St Petersburg ahead of the country's annual war commemoration on 9 May, known as Victory Day.

But they suddenly left again for deployment in the Baltic, according to news agency Fontanko.ru

A source confirmed to RIA Novosti news agency that the navy parade in St.Petersburg will take place as planned but fewer ships will participate in it.

But the source denied that the sudden departure of some vessels had something to do with the arrival of USS Carney.

The country's major commemoration will be held on Red Square in Moscow presided over by Putin.

In late April, a Kilo-class Russian submarine was detected near Latvian territorial waters.

Earlier in the month warships also ventured close to the ex-Soviet state's territorial waters.

In 2016 Russian military aircraft and naval vessels were spotted near Latvia's border some 209 times.

Economic Zone and Territorial waters are two different things.

Exactly.

You can't blame Putin for testing Trump. He's just trying to establish some boundaries.

Cute little ships, at least the Russians can say they are still floating. Don’t know if they carry anti-ship missiles or torpedos.

Headline doesn't match the story. The headline implies that the ships entered Latvian territorial waters. They did not.

FAKE news.

Anybody know how good or powerful their navy is.

I know it’s not a match for ours but would it be a match for, say, England or France?

So let Angela Merkel send one of Germany’s nuclear submarines to respond. Oh wait...

Not sure. Their last major naval battle, against Japan, didn't go so well.

England is one of the weaker navies in the world now. The Japanese and Indian navies far exceed their combat power except for nuclear boomer subs that don’t factor in much outside of nuclear war.

Nothing screams "Russian naval superiority" than the Carrier Admiral Kuznetsov spewing diesel smoke.

Apparently up to half its toilets don't even work. That must be great for morale.

Considering that UK Boomers carry 16 Trident II Missiles that have 10 warheads each (Trident II can carry between 8-12 depending on the warhead, but are limited to 10 due to START). I would say that the the rest of their Navy does not need to be overwhelmingly powerful.

I cannot blame Russia. We wouldn’t have put up with the Warsaw Pact setting up an “economic zone” around Cuba. Over the decades NATO has gone from being an stabilizing counter to Soviet communist power to being an ever-expanding encroaching empire threatening to surround and choke Russia into submission.

But really, they aren’t a Naval country and never will be. We are because we are mostly projecting outward and fighting everywhere BUT Conus. So we need a good Air Force and Navy. We have to go everywhere on earth, and protect supply lines. On point defense SAMs we are fairly weak.

They have a different set of needs. They have a giant landmass, and their threat is either invasion from Europe (has happened many times with catastrophic damage) or a nuclear attack from us, or maybe china. So a small navy is fine for them. All of their supply lines are on land. So they have a weak navy mostly coastal and nuclear subs. They want large numbers of tanks and artillery and most of all, they have mastered the SAM missile.

The level of mastery we have at sea and with our air force, they have with SAM defenses because its a fantastic way to defend a large landmass.
Different goals, different tools.
And interestingly, it makes us poorly matched to fight.
They can’t project power to come here to attack us conventionally. And we don’t have the forces to conquer them conventionally on land. Also, part of their normal defense from invasion plan is that the land attacker can expect their homeland to get fully strategically nuked.

There is some neocon fantasy out there that we can have a conventional fight with them, in Russia, and they will accept a defeat. But after WWII, when they got the nuke, they realized that never again can anyone invade them without risking certain total destruction of their home too. They like this and it is part of their doctrine.

So we will be treated to lots of the chest thumping. Maybe a plane shot down someday, our or theirs. But there will either be no war at all, an all out nuclear war, OR, we will continue trying to undermine from within, with a Russian spring to install a western banking friendly government. Like Ukraine, Libya, Syria, etc. Its our new way of invading.

You are wrong. If that was true, nobody would need anything BUT boomers. The fact is, the Royal Navy could not do the Falklands invasion today. Period. The Harriers are all gone. The strategic bombers are all gone. Britain has a handful of land based fighters and that’s it. They have no carrier yet. The British army literally has more generals than they do tanks. The best they could do today against the same force the fought back then would be to surround the islands, and sink reinforcements. They couldn’t rule the skies, and couldn’t make the landings.

A boomer can nuke Argentina, or not. There is little else it can do. So short of all out nuclear war, boomers really don’t give you any “naval power”.

Wow. Interesting. Thanks for all the info.

Ukraine, Libya and Syria turned out great :) /s

Posturing is a funny thing. It can on for decades without leading to wars.

Falklands: I think Trump should negotiate a deal where the 2,000 brits leave. It’s the Monroe Doctrine thing. All of South America would appreciate it just like they did over the Panama Canal. The rest of the continent will turn against socialism.
