Head of California high-speed rail project calls it quits

California’s $64 billion high-speed rail project said Friday that he’s stepping down after five years pushing forward a vision of 220-mph trains that still faces stiff resistance from lawmakers and the public.

Jeff Morales, 57, told The Chronicle that uncertainty over the project’s future had nothing to do with his resignation, only a genuine desire to move aside after breaking ground on the nation’s largest infrastructure project.

“We’ve made a tremendous amount of progress, from being at a standstill to having $3 billion-plus of construction under way,” he said. “Frankly, I didn’t think I’d be here for five years. I had no gray hair when I started the job. I have lots of it now.”

Morales, who sent his resignation letter to Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday, plans to remain chief executive officer of the California High Speed Rail Authority through June 2, long enough for his replacement to be found. The search for a successor has begun.

The worst boondoggle in recent history. Billions of potential rip offs by corrupt political hacks foreseeable. And a ridiculous project ( which they still don’t know how to get it into SF or LA). Someone should put this sicko out of its misery before it eats up more of the taxpayers’ money. By comparison, governor Brown’s space satellite idea was better

The search for a successor has begun.

Cut the budget in half, give the remainder to Elon Musk, case closed.

The money pit...wasn’t this sold as a privately financed deal that fares would pay for?

He is bragging about flushing $3 billion in taxpayer money down the toilet. He is proud of it.

You can bet that boondoggle created more California millionaires with just a small amount of the taxpayer money that somehow slipped through the cracks.

Bitterly, you are correct. But while he does go in for absolutely pie-in-the-sky schemes, you can't say that his EXCLUSIVE goal is to fleece the drooling poltroons.

With the exising government plan, the odds of success were ZERO from the outset and NONE of them took seriously the idea they'd build any type of train.

A horse and buggy could have crossed the country by now. :)

Part of the cross Continental railroad (a couple of thousand miles) was build in something like 18 months.

The only real drawback was it cost the lives of many china-man who were building it.
