Maryland insurers request 38.5 percent rate increase for individual health plans

Four insurance carriers are seeking average rate increases ranging from 9 percent to 150 percent for individual health plans sold in Maryland for 2018.

The proposed rate increases average at 38.5 percent and would bring monthly premium prices for a mid-level plan for a 40-year-old Baltimore resident to between $359.25 and $714.95. The proposed rates are subject to review and approval by the Maryland Insurance Administration.

The requests come on the same day House Republicans in Congress passed a bill repealing parts of the Affordable Care Act and replacing them with new provisions.

Individual plans are for people who aren't covered by an employer-backed health plan and instead buy coverage of their own. They buy these plans through the state's online Affordable Care Act marketplace.

My girlfriend is on Obamacare in MD.

The first year she had it she paid $30mo. Second year - $130. This year - $190.

Cost she pays is about half of the total policy cost per month. The state picks up the rest.

She’s in her 50s and hardly EVER uses her health insurance. She’s never sick. She’s had a physical each year and this year had an eye infection. That’s it.

The state has screwed up her SSN and she has been unable to get Maryland to fix it for 3 years running. They keep paying Kaiser subsidies for two people: one in her name and SSN and the other in her name and screwed up last four of the SSN. IRS gives her hell.

She can’t wait to drop Obamacare.

I know that I am going to get flamed but here it is: I guess the “special people of a certain religion” who own most of the stock in all insurance companies want their money! After all, Obama had the “deal made” to reimburse them for their support for the democrat candidate of his choice with lures of bigger and better profits.

Flame on....I have pants made out of asbestos!

Who would have guessed that socialism and big government would fail, even in an enthusiastically socialist big government state?

DH, who are you talking about?

As an aside, I pay for an individual policy @$10k/year.

In 1970, a trip to an ER cost no more than $200.00. That’s all. Off the gold standard in 2017, it’s probably $2k.
