Trump Is Expected to Relax Tax Rules on Churches Endorsing Political Candidates

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Thursday will ease restrictions on political activity by churches and charities, White House officials said, but has backed away from a broader religious liberty order that would have allowed faith-based organizations and companies to avoid serving or hiring gay people.

Conservative religious leaders who were fierce supporters of Mr. Trump’s candidacy had pushed the president to provide faith organizations with much more sweeping relief from Obama-era regulations that protect gay men, lesbians and others from discrimination.

Instead, in an executive order, Mr. Trump will offer a vague promise to “protect and vigorously promote religious liberty.” He will also direct federal agencies to exempt some religious organizations from Affordable Care Act requirements that provide employees with health coverage for contraception.

By making those promises to mark the National Day of Prayer at the White House, Mr. Trump is offering a partial remedy to the anger inside some religious communities toward federal laws they believe require them to put aside beliefs about homosexuality, contraception or other issues.

Mr. Trump’s executive order on political activity, which he will sign while hosting conservative religious leaders, tries to overcome a provision in the federal tax code that prohibits churches and other religious organizations from directly opposing or supporting political candidates.

The churches that Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and a whole host of “Black Civil Rights Leaders” operate under different rules.

Agreed. The IRS under Obama had no problems with the Catholic church marching for illegal immigrants and advocating openly for amnesty.

This very EO by President Trump is one of the major reasons I supported him. Once again, Trump keeps his promises.

The Religious Liberty bill does nothing to stop queers from suing businesses till the cows come home if the business owner refuses to bake them a “wedding’ cake. The bill also leaves in place Obama’s ridiculous protections for LGBT and other sexual deviants working in the Fed government.

Trump mentioned this fairly early in the campaign. I think its a big deal as it brings a lot more conservative activists into the process.

President Trump is quite interesting ideologically and I think its a mistake to think he isn't a ideologue in his own fashion.

I remembering him explain he was running as a conservative but it was clear he was adapting some of their causes and he was asking them (Us conservatives) to adapt to some of his beliefs/positions/policies/ideas.

He made a deal with the conservatives and the RNC heck he even signed a pledge.

A key insight was in the debate where he schooled Ted Cruz when the Senator started in with the Chamber of Commerce line on free trade and how that it would solve the problem. Trump looked at Ted like an adult looks at a 16 year old know it all and said "Ted the problem with that is it will take to long" then when on to explain how to fix the problem quickly if not as per conservative orthodoxy.

This was unusual it seemed to me in an era where politicians try to make the voters think they believe what the voters believe - rather then the Trump approach of proposing an alternative and offering an argument.

I think he is what I'm calling a proportionalist - I believe thats a GK Chesterton term but I find it helpful in seeing the uniquely independent course president Trump seems to be chartering. Offering an alternative to the bogus false choice we've been handed for decades.

This idea is emerging but here are some of the events and elements of Trumps "Proprotionalism".

As long as his chief advisors are NY liberals by the names of Jerald and Ivanka Kustner President Trump will be a champion of the LGBT crowd,
