China urges citizens in N. Korea to return home

By Ko Dong-hwan

The Chinese Embassy in North Korea has advised Korean-Chinese residents to return home amid concern that the North's military provocations may trigger a U.S. attack on the North, according to a source.

The embassy began sending the message on Apr. 20, five days before the North celebrated the 85th anniversary of the Korean People's Army with a show of military power, Radio Free Asia said Tuesday.

The U.S.-based station specializes in North Korea.

The station cited a Korean-Chinese living in the North's capital, who said he left for China late last month after the embassy contacted him.

He said he has been visiting China every two to three months but, after being told he should "stay in China for a while," left North Korea a month early.

"The embassy has never given such a warning. I was worried and left the country in a hurry," said the man, whose name was withheld.

But he said that most Korean-Chinese residents in Pyongyang were ignoring the message.

The city's "peaceful" atmosphere, despite the global crisis due to the state's threats involving missiles and nuclear tests, might have kept them unaware of the situation, he added.

The embassy's warning indicates that China is worried that the saber-rattling North and U.S. moves to destabilize the Kim Jong-un regime might affect Chinese citizens abroad.

The North was expected to conduct its sixth nuclear test around the 105th anniversary of the state's founder Kim Il-sung's birth on Apr. 15 and/or on the national military anniversary on Apr. 25.

The test did not happen on either day, except a fizzled missile test on Apr. 29.

All signs suggest that China fully expects the attack to happen.

I think it very likely. I see almost zero odds of them giving up their nuclear weapons and missiles. And Trump won’t be bullied.

It’s going to take time to get all assets ready and into the theater, though. The Ronald Reagan just finished repairs. It’s supposedly heading next to Iwo Jima for landing practice - but of course both Tokyo and Iwo Jima are just a short hop from the DPRK. The Nimitz just finished training and will soon be getting its assignment. THAAD is “minimally operational”, but they’re going to want to have the battery at full capability before launching an attack. Air assets for the attack can be moved in quickly. I haven’t seen much sign of heavy ground assets on the move, however. Of course, I don’t expect that the ROK, particularly with their new president, would allow a ground invasion from their territory (out of a naive hope that the DPRK wouldn’t attack them if they don’t take part... even though a ground assault would be the easiest way to ensure their safety against a counterattack). Trump will probably want to give the new president some time to get up to speed on everything, rather than launching an attack during his first week in office.

All signs tell me that we won’t be seeing an attack in the next few weeks. Within a couple months, however, seems pretty likely to me. The only thing that would suggest to me otherwise is if the Ronald Reagan got dispatched to somewhere far from the DPRK (and could be confirmed to be far away from the DPRK). I can’t imagine that they’d take those sort of assets out of the theater when planning a first strike.

It’s going to be difficult to keep the evacuation or movement south of American military dependents. When we hear the dependents are moving south or to Japan, it will be a sign.

Tiger..here’s another interesting development.....

A Chinese town near the border with North Korea is ....”urgently” recruiting Korean-Chinese Interpreters”,.... stirring speculation that China is bracing for an emergency situation involving its nuclear-armed neighbor.

Yeah, I think somethings up. I live on the east/west axis of McGuire AFB here in southern NJ. All last week there were lots of air refuelers heading out east bound.

The signs are everywhere that preparation is being made. As it should be. Even if your hope is a peaceful resolution, you need to prepare for war; otherwise you have no negotiating standpoint. Obama never understood this. All of the countries he was in charge of negotiating with understood this well.

I think they are planning for some kind of occupation.
Lately, Trump is making diplomatic overtures to Kim Jong-un, which sounds like the last call for surrender.

....”They are planning for some kind of occupation”.....

I think you’re right....’all’ indications are pointing that direction. It’s like the last steps are being checked off one after the other before the final push...

I tend to think this is going to be similar to how Russia went into Crimea....there was very little resistance from the people in fact those who recognized what was happening helped out.....

Looks like the “deal” agreed on is China takes control....and the Kim Regime is out as I’ve never seen Kim Un quite so rattled and seemingly desperate.

I don’t think it’s going to go that far.....we may take out the facilities but everyone familiar with Kims army etc. says they are not at all ready for military combat. I think China’s simply going to take control. The people will likely not resist too much.....

Agreed. Judging from how N. Korean media is reacting, it is hysterical even in N. Korean standard. They may feel that they could be hit by a hammer of U.S. military from the front while being stabbed in the back by Chinese. It is not inconceivable that N. Korea could mine their northern border area with a nuclear bomb. They can detonate it if Chinese troops are surging in.

I have wondered about this. What is in it for China?

China could quickly occupy from Kimchaek to Yongamp. They would overrun the nuclear facilities and gain something they don't have. The port of Chongjin gives them direct access to the Sea of Japan.

Trumps saying he'd meet with Kim is purposely stated because Kim has wanted most of all to be recognized as the legitimate Leader of N.Korea by an International Leader. Kim hasn't met with a single leader anywhere since taking office. The people expect their leader to be “seen” with International leaders as seeing is believing to them when it comes to Kim.

But this is why Kim takes hostages....it forced leaders to go there to release them.. (As it did with Clinton when he went there)and then N.Korea uses this as photo ops to support Kims telling the people the world looks up to him.

Trump offering to meet with Kim was very smart for it “feeds” Kims ego....the question is if or not he believes Trump....there's a lot of psychological warfare going on now.

Well there’s quite a bit in it for China...they can put in a puppet government ...also have access to N.Koreas resources....and yet the n koreans probably wouldn’t object too much about China being there because they already know how China works in their country.

The only people who would have a hard time are those who truly believe Kim is Divine.....and over the past years so much has gone into N.Korea via smugglers etc. most of the people have at least had enough exposure that at the very least question Kims divinity.

As for how china takes control.....we shall certainly see....it may just be a silent takeover....except for taking out Kims advisor groups..who really run the show for the most part.

What is interesting is two weeks ago China sent their top nuclear people to N.Korea.....and the chinese Officials who always stand with Kim were not present at all. So could be it began two weeks ago in positioning people there....

I think those are “border guards + riot suppression units.” No doubt some of them will be moving into N. Korea if PLA does.
