Castro won’t seek Senate seat (against Ted Cruz)

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro has decided not to seek the Democratic nomination next year to challenge U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, according to Democratic sources, clearing the way for a likely Senate contest next year between Cruz and U.S Rep. Beto O’Rourke of El Paso.

Castro, of San Antonio, is expected to announce soon that he will bypass the contest to focus on his work in the House, which includes a coveted seat on the House Intelligence Committee.

Castro declared last summer that he planned to weigh a campaign against Cruz and he has done so during a tumultuous period for national security. Castro also is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Castro, 42, is viewed as one Texas’s most popular and aggressive young Democrats, along with twin brother Julián, a former San Antonio mayor who returned home in January after 30 months heading the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Obama administration.

Cruz is fantastic in the Senate. However the thought of Castro debating Cruz would be deliciously entertaining.

As irritated as many Trump voters are with Cruz, he says the right things in the Senate, votes the right way, and makes both the democrats and the RINO establishment angry. I’d rather have him in SCOTUS, but I’m more than happy to keep him in the US Senate. As for the White House, he lost me on a couple of major points in his campaign rhetoric, but that doesn’t mean I’m ready to toss him and risk losing the Senate seat. Let’s challenge the RINOs instead - the lying rodents who voted to repeal Obamacare so many times but not when it would finally work.

I wonder if Cruz will run unopposed... especially since dems have so many seats to defend.

FTA.....

“...clearing the way for a likely Senate contest next year between Cruz and U.S Rep. Beto O’Rourke of El Paso.”

The dems in Texas always have some loser to throw under the bus. I mean throw in the ring against the conservative.

Remember Abortion Barbie AKA Wendy Davis? Hoo boy!

Disclaimer: I wanted Cruz to win the nomination in 2016 so bad I could taste it.

Disclaimer # 2: I was never a Never-Trumpster.

Disclaimer # 3: Trump has done, so far, exactly what I expected Cruz to do if Cruz was elected President.

This is the long way around saying I can't see how ANY Democrat can beat Cruz in Texas.

I don’t understand why he can’t according to so many FReepers Cruz is far to the Left of Castro, many would vote for Fidel Castro before they would vote for Ted.

No. He done his homework and thinks he has a better shot as Warren’s VP choice. He is going to lose either way.

Damn, I was hoping to see Cruz sent to the cleaners, after what he did to Trump, and the country. Trump’s victory could have been a NEAR-BLOWOUT if not for the NeverTrumpers, like Cruz. So now Trump has to deal with trying to govern without a mandate, and it’s showing.

I would hope that you can’t vote in Texas and/or would even consider voting for a Democrat over Cruz. Cruz is a great Senator - unlike Cornyn.

I think the Dems know their chances of winning a Senate seat in TX hovers right around zero and Castro is just avoiding the inevitable defeat that will come.

I vote in Texas and I am STILL WAITING for Cruz to again earn my vote. He made his bed - he can sleep in it for all that I care.

Agree - Cruz seems to have recovered from the election and I would donate to his campaign if it looked like he needed the support.
