Full Title: North Korea threat: Experts paint dark picture of what fallout of pre-emptive strike may look like

Foreign policy experts theorized Tuesday about what a pre-emptive military strike against North Korea may look like in the event that pressure from China and deepening isolation does little to stop Pyongyang's rogue regime.

The Trump administration--which is holding an emergency meeting Wednesday at the White House-- has said “all options” are on the table, but the White House appears to be losing patience with Pyongyang.

Former CIA analyst Bruce Klingner told Newsweek that Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader, would likely hit back with an artillery barrage in the event of a pre-emptive strike by the U.S. or an ally.

Article states that NK has 1 million man army and 600 SCUD missiles that could be launched with Chemical Weapons.

The article paints a grim picture.

Sounds like the F117 Nighthawk would be useful to take it out of Mothballs... (My opinion only)

Things will only get worse, the Norks need to be stopped.

Exactly. The old Fram Filters commercial comes to mind.

“Pay me now or pay me later.”

The sorry thing about all of these so-called experts is their constant assertion we have not gamed out the possible scenarios and what resources we need to employ to mitigate or even to neutralize them.

Then there are the penalties for not changing to a better filter a long time ago.

They are trying to add nukes and ICBM's to their arsenal.

Truly insane.

China needs to mediate.

PRC owns this. Do they have the resolve? Remember too that Chinese history demonstrates profound patience. While the west chomps at the bit and jumps head first into most circumstances, China will wait, 50 perhaps 100 years. China plays a long game of Go, the west and especially the U.S., prefer speed checkers.

The ROKs are a capable force - especially with our warriors assisting.

The South uses the mountainous landscape to its advantage - lots of passes have huge piles of rocks that can be released to block passage and limit/funnel the NORK's advances.

If SHTF, we could leave a lot of broken corpses in place of the million man army.

It would be ugly for a while, but when the dust settled, there would be a much brighter future for Korea....and Japan, and __________ (fill in the blank).

I agree, but I think we need to have a clear set of objectives before we start. It’s important to remember that more than 4500 US casualties in Iraq happened AFTER Bush made his ‘mission accomplished’ speech.

We had a plan for winning the initial fight against the Iraqis and taking down Saddam, but we didn’t have a plan for what came after and got bogged down in chaos trying to sort it out.

I have faith in the generals that they will devise the best possible plan to defeat the Norks initially. I don’t know what a good plan for after that would be.

You’re forgetting the proverbial gun to the head that the north has on the south. The amount of artillery pointed at seoul is crazy.

The real issue is the North Korean artillery. That’s the hard egg that has so far been impossible to crack. The million-man NK army is honestly really neither here nor there ...it is a credible military, and they have an interesting approach to special forces, but the US military would absolutely chew them up. The use of massed armies against the US would not be prudent. The problem though is the over 10,000 artillery pieces aimed at Seoul, and the genesis of that problem is that it is (currently) not possible to neutralize all that artillery before Seoul is razed to the ground, the SK economy hit hard, and over a million people dead. That’s the real issue ...NK would be defeated, but not before they took Seoul with them. When that problem gets a solution then that is the day the KIM family will lose its hold over Pyongyang.

This must be fake news. Bill Clinton solved this issue 25 years ago by giving them money, just like Obama gave money to Iran.

I hope the expert is not related to they guy who said the Himalayas would melt by 2020. This only goes one of a few ways. We back down, China screws the lid down, they back down. The Seoul problem... the one million souls held hostage for decades. A thriving economy that supports S Korea. One day Seoul will pay the piper, its the only way out. Perhaps S Korea should start thinking long term and create a new Seoul.
It is inevitable Seoul will be lost as it is, only S Korea can fix that problem. We can’t choose that for them.
What would N Korea do if we simply left... take our troops, our money and go?
This could be a Berlin Wall moment.

merciless, massive, round the clock carpet bombing along the DMZ from the coast on the West Sea, up to around Chorlwon and the Second Tunnel area, in any area that has effective artillery placement, and all command and control facilities. back and forth, back and forth, back and forth

AFTER Bush made his ‘mission accomplished’ speech.
************************************
Bush didn’t do that. The banner was on the ship to recognize that their crewmen and squadrons had successfully met their mission requirements.

That would work in destroying the artillery ...but not before several devastating barrages had already destroyed Seoul. The only thing that could work is massive nuclear strikes, but we both know that wouldn’t happen preemptively.

The plan for after that would be the same as with the Iraq War: the DemocRATs will use the Korean war as a means to destroy Trump.

Always remember what differentiates one Party from the other:

DemocRATs seek Power

Republicans seek reelection

"The amount of artillery pointed at seoul is crazy."

Yup!

"“Without moving a single soldier in its million-man army,” Klingner said. “The North could launch a devastating attack on Seoul.”

...

An arsenal of 600 chemically armed Scud missiles would be fired on all South Korean airports, train stations and marine ports, making it impossible for civilians to escape,

...

Even with North Korea’s first wave of attacks, war planners still believe the U.S. and South Korea would come out on top, but the casualties could be catastrophic."
