Grew up NYC area and never heard of grits until I got to Parris Island, 1966. Was so hungry I ate everything they had to offer.
Fifty years later and I still eat grits.

My dad went through Parris Island in the 40s. He gained 40 pounds while there.
He always talked about how good the food was.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Grits.

I grew up in Mass, born in the Inter mountain West never had grits until I went into the Army. They were good but not on the par with the fried potatoes I grew up with at breakfast.
I sent my daughter to UA to learn manners and the cook at a track stop I used to go to made the best grits I have ever tasted. Got the recipe and have made them ever since.
