A leading Church of England vicar yesterday condemned the words of one of the countrys best-loved hymns as obscene, offensive and unfit to be sung by Christians. The Reverend Gordon Giles, one of the Anglicans leading authorities on hymns, declared that I Vow to Thee My Country should be rewritten if it is to be sung by modern congregations.
His verdict was delivered in advance of the remembrance weekend when the hymn, which is especially valued by military families, will feature in thousands of services across the country and the Commonwealth.

The song is a very powerful hymn:

What a toad, I love that song.
You can see lot of these vicars on PBS.
If I did, would that be vicarious?
OUR COLORS SO TRUE
Three colors has the nation's flag our hearts delight to see,
The Red, and White, and starry Blue, our pledge of liberty. O Red, White, and Blue, our colors so true,
An emblem fair of heav'nly things, to help us on our way; O Red, White, and Blue, the old and the new,
Our banner of gladness, we hail it today!
Red speaks to us of Jesus' blood for all the whole world shed,
That we might rise to life and light, through Him who once was dead.
O Red, White, and Blue, our colors so true,
An emblem fair of heav'nly things, to help us on our way;
O Red, White, and Blue, the old and the new,
Our banner of gladness, we hail it today!
White tells of those who, pure in heart, shall see the Savior's face,
And in His likeness daily grow, in heaven's holy place.
O Red, White, and Blue, our colors so true,
An emblem fair of heav'nly things, to help us on our way;
O Red, White, and Blue, the old and the new,
Our banner of gladness, we hail it today!
Blue tells us of the faithful ones who like the stars shall be,
Bright jewels in the Victor's crown, through all eternity.
O Red, White, and Blue, our colors so true,
An emblem fair of heav'nly things, to help us on our way;
O Red, White, and Blue, the old and the new,
Our banner of gladness, we hail it today!
Lizzie de Armond and Charles Gabriel, 1908
Why yes, it would. Pretty much everything on TV is like that.
This beautiful anthem (exclusive of the words) is derived from music from The Planets, Jupiter, by Gustav Holst, an Englishman of Swedish and English ancestry.
Most of the boys in my church would come to life in church when we started singing about that bomb in Gilead.
We had talked about it, were intrigued and wanted to know more.
This sounds upside-down. Who is a sodomite to complain about something being obscene?
And what is it that he leads? Not sure I want to know.
True British patriots - maybe not everybody there, but that is why this hymn is so hated by so many of the left intelligentsia in the UK - because they hate the people who love it. They hate the people who are willing to sign up, and if needed, die for their country. They cannot understand that.
Maybe if we thru in we love all muslims, that might change his mind
The vicar has been nipping a little too much communion wine.
