Yes, the DMZ is a narrow area between the two Koreas. No, the United States no longer has units on the DMZ. They are further back in support of the ROK units. The ROK Army has responsibility for the DMZ now. There may still be a few US soldiers in the Joint Security Area (JSA) where talks are held between the two sides.
So generations of soldiers have been assigned there as if the war were frozen in time?
Kinda spooky.
Was it a war? Wasn’t it called a police action or something. Is it still a war?
I wonder if it’s the longest truce in history.
I guess having troops too close is an invitation for the North Koreans to cross the DMZ and attack them.
That is why having snipers in an area close by would be good -- if soldiers of North Korea cross into South Korea, snipers could send them a message.
By that, I mean not necessarily a kill shot.
There was the interesting case of ISIS (I believe in Iraq but not sure) going to execute hostages with a flame thrower.
There were three ISIS terrorists: one to use the flame thrower and two to film the execution of the hostages by flame thrower.
Supposedly ISIS had done this before -- execute hostages with a flame thrower.
The only problem this time was that a British sniper targeted the flame thrower (not the ISIS terrorist).
By hitting the flame thrower, the British sniper took out all three ISIS terrorists.
