Kurds in Syrias Raqqa province set up a civilian assembly on Tuesday that will govern the region after the ousting of Islamic State (IS) from its capital city, local media reported.
The city will be liberated soon and our assembly will be consolidated. Then, we will be able to deal with all the problems, Mehmud Sewax Bersan, the administrations newly-elected co-chair, said as quoted by the Firat news agency.
The creation of the assembly was announced at a meeting in the town of Ayn Issa, north of Raqqa, the main stronghold of IS in Syria. It will consist of 14 committees on security, economy, justice and energy, among other aspects of governance.
The gathering was attended by Syrian groups, including the Syrian Democratic Forces, a group dominated by the Kurdish Peoples Protection Units (YPG), as well as delegates from Arab and Turkmen minorities. All three forces are involved in a coalition-supported operation to liberate Raqqa.
The SDF is doing a great job of establishing local democratically elected government.
It took something as evil as ISIS to bring this about. I pray the unity passes the test of time.
The Kurds are better than most in that part of the world. Things could be much, much worse.
Totally agree. They are good people. I’m proud to call some of them friends.
Sounds good to me, very good. But what does Assad say about the arrangement??
The Kurds were one of many peoples who got screwed by Sykes-Picot. They’re one of the few groups in that region who display the civility and self-discipline necessary to create and sustain a democracy, but anybody who supports their independence/autonomy better be prepared to back them in the war with Turkey that would be sure to follow.
Solution is US joint venture with Russia. I know that sounds insane, but it is the only solution.
Assad? Not sure.
Iran? Big Question
SA money? Yes, headshake
Turkey? No solution. Erdogan the Islamist is totally insane. He stole the Referendum, all know it, CHP head stated it openly. Will he keep power?
My take on that, with out without Kurds, Turkey will leave NATO if Erdogan stays. If he had not had the fau coup, the Kemalists would have already eliminated him.
Pray God’s protection and blessing on these incredibly courageous leaders.
Are you saying a region run by the Kurd’s would be destabilizing for both Turkey and Iran. Both have a large Kurdish population.
Then why would we have troops stationed in Raqqa when it upsets our Turkish allies, unless that was part of the plan.
It is great that some good is coming out of all the evil that is ISIS and al Qaeda.
I totally agree. But the bad players are not all dead yet. I’m confident we are approaching the end of ISIS in Syria.
Their financiers are still standing. The ComDems (and a few RINOs) who helped create this mess are not exposed for their actions.
There are still threats from Turkey and Iran against the survivors of this brutal war. This is the Middle East.
They will need some good friends for a long time to rebuild the damage.
If that happens, they may become a magnet for those persecuted by their neighbors.
What have you read about Turkey that justifies using that term during Erdogan's rule? Yes, they are still a member of NATO.
Thanks for the pix .Usually there would be only one ensign (flag) which represents the sponsoring entity. What or who is represented by the four standards (flags) behind this group ?
Rehana, defender of Kobani. She is said to have killed over 100 of ISIS.

Another famous Kobani sniper who dispatch huge number of ISIS was Abu Layla
SDF Flag, YPG Flag, YPJ Flag, not sure about rest.
There are some Arab militia’s involved in SDF. (I’ve had no contact with them so it is vague for me.)
There are 200 fighters who were recently recruited from the Raqqa area who have joined the effort.
The total SDF is pretty large (>80,000 I’ve heard). The number in the Raqqa operation is still fuzzy. I hope it remains so until it is over for ISIS.
I’m told there is great respect for the US Special OPs and the Marine Howitzer crews and the USAF & Army chopper crews. And that is reflected by our forces toward the SDF (& Kurds)
I’ve watched video’s of Abu Layla in his home and in battle. He was very funny guy. But did the job in battle. Greatly respected by those he trained.
I cannot remember the whole story, but at some point he adopted the name he used for a family member. Used it in her honor until he died.
Thanks for the fill in
