Let me ask you one question: how would you feel if this happened to you? You’ve bought the item (in this case, a flight), paid for it, have it in your possession - and then the seller comes along and says sorry, it’s not yours, it belongs to a “better” owner that the seller has belatedly chosen so you have to give it back. I’m just surprised no one has fought back before.

Don’t forget that federal regulation limit how much compensation the airlines can offer someone to bump them from a flight....

Not to mention all the other federal regs that increase the cost of airlines that contribute tot he airline culture of constantly trying to overbook flights....

I would obey the law and leave the plane.

I respect private property.

One, I am in complete agreement with the writer. Two, I would have been furious, but would not have escalated the situation where folks had to force me to leave. Three, when you book a “risky” ticket, you run the risks. Airlines have different prices for different tickets and not all tickets are the same. Nothing new here. One fliers ignorance and bad manners is zero concern of mine. If he was holding up the flight by acting like a jackass, I would have helped carry him off the plane.

It would suck, but you’ve got to pick your battles in life. The fact of the matter is airlines have a nearly absolute right to kick people off their planes, this was a battle he could not win. Best to leave the plane quietly and use his anger to get fat cash from United. Did he really think “if I throw a loud enough temper tantrum they’ll let me stay”? Haven’t we all learned better by the time we get to puberty? Once you start throwing a tantrum the airline kind of HAS to pull you off the plane, otherwise everybody learns the way to avoid getting bumped is being childish.

.
This post is all smoke and mirrors.

None of it relates to the known facts of the case, nor to UAL’s own policies and contracts.

Wasted bandwidth.

Its a stupid question. “Bumping” has gone on for over 30 years and has been declared legal. Anyone who flies knows this. You don’t have to “like” it but to deny reality is just plain stupid.

By the way, I quit flying in 2002 due to the BS at the airport. I didn’t cry and refuse to follow legal orders.

well, in many cases, this is handled at the terminal

That is bad, but letting a person sit down makes it worse.

You and I would be inclined to agree if we're still in the terminal -- we won't like it, but we'd be more likely to agree than if we were actually sitting on the seat.

The airlines generally either give the bumped passenger a voucher for another flight, or the gate crew helps them find another flight to their destination. In larger airports, where this is more likely to happen, there are usually several flights to most destinations during that same day. In the event the passenger has to stay overnight, I believe the airline also offers a voucher for a hotel.

There will invariably be people on any given flight who do not necessarily HAVE to fly at that particular time, and wouldn't mind flying a little later in the day. The fact that three of the folks on that flight had no problem with the arrangement likely bears that out. When I fly, I'm usually not in so much of a hurry that delaying for a few hours would be a burden, given that the airline is willing to offer a voucher or help arrange another flight that day.

The problem is you used the word “seller”, no one sold anyone anything. There was no exchange of possession.
