Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said during a joint press conference at the White House.
Stoltenberg reminded Trump and the public that NATO allies have contributed to the defense of the Untied States, emphasizing that about 1,000 members of allied militaries have died fighting in Afghanistan. But he paired that conventional defense of NATO with a clear olive branch to Trump, who rattled international leaders during the 2016 presidential election by threatening to abandon allies who fail to contribute to the common defense.
Such rhetoric has produced a $10 billion increase in defense spending. "We are . . . seeing the effect of your strong focus on the importance of burden-sharing in the alliance," Stoltenberg said.

My prez!!!
More winning!
it’s peanuts and nothing to celebrate
Someone was just complaining to me yesterday, “Yeah, but they haven’t paid it yet.”
Well, as a mater of fact, they have.
“:^)
$10 billion may be peanuts to you, but it’s $10 billion to me.
Trump has been in office for about 83 days, and he’s gotten an additional $10 billion out of NATO nations.
By next year this time it will be significantly higher.
Absolutely more winning!
$10 Billion ain’t chickenfeed.
for them to meet their collective 2% obligation they would have to increase over $300bil per year.
Mariner, how much of that $10 billion did Obama get us each year? Crickets! None of it.
This is $10 billion more than was being spent. Further, I don’t want them to spend $300 billion.
I do not want a U.S. size military in Europe. In time it would become another global force to be reckoned with. We want them capable to help, but not capable to challenge. With Europe’s record, we don’t want what they could do to themselves either.
If they up their game and put up tens of billions of dollars or perhaps over $100 billion, that’s $100 billion less per year we have to spend.
This is all about savings. They spend it. We don’t.
$100 billion here. $100 billion there. Pretty soon we’re talking big money.
This is how massive savings come about.
Ten such ‘gets’ per year, you’re up to a trillion per year.
Couple this with jobs coming back, manufacturers investing in the U.S. again, China agreeing to purchase more goods, it all adds up to a big deal for our nation and economy.
for them to meet their collective 2% obligation they would have to increase over $300bil per year.
Sounds like Germany is going to try to hide behind the 2015 agreement to modestly increase defense spending that was made with the kenyan. That will go over like a lead balloon with POTUS. There will be conflict here. Guaranteed.
“:^)
remember, that collective increase would be distributed across 28 countries.
that would in no way be a “global” force. Remember, they are also Europeans...from 28 different countries.
they’d be lucky to field 10 effective combat brigades. now I don’t think they could field 2 ready brigades under all 28 flags. they are that weak.
$10 billion? Pffft!
Better then giving money to our enemies. Paid voters, bribes, vacations.
$10B here, $10B there, pretty soon you’re talking real money.
And it’s not OUR money being spent. ;)
$10B here, $10B there, pretty soon you’re talking real money.
And it’s not OUR money being spent. ;)
They contributed to OUR defense?
How about simply stepping up to throw a few pennies into the coffer as a token sum for YOUR OWN DEFENSE.
Idiots.
“...I do not want a U.S. size military in Europe. In time it would become another global force to be reckoned with...”
BTW: I have been researching WWII, Stalin, Hitler lately. How can they just let Germany run the show again over there?
Are they absolutely crazy, a similar situation is repeating itself again. Do they not study their own history?
Merkel is a flat out maniacal mad-woman. The European Union leadership is UNELECTED.
The proposed military force she wants, would be huge and powerful. Most importantly controlled by UNELECTED people.
Pure insanity.
“More winning!”
Yes it is. Part of the Trump strategy that many here on FR fail to grasp.
