President Trump approves Montenegro's membership in NATO

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed the U.S. instrument of ratification for Montenegro's accession to NATO, the White House said in a statement.

Last month the Senate overwhelmingly backed the expansion of NATO to allow Montenegro to join the alliance, hoping to send a message that the United States will push back against Russian efforts to increase its influence in Europe.

I thought Ron Paul was right to oppose Montenegro's entrance into NATO. Senator McCain was furious at Senator Paul and accused him of being a Russian agent! Senator Paul wrote: "Adding a country with fewer than 2,000 soldiers to NATO is not in our self-interest. There is no national security interest that an alliance with Montenegro will advance. If we invite Montenegro into NATO, it will be a one-way street with the U.S. committing to defend yet another country." This makes sense to me. Why would President Trump agree to allow Montenegro to join NATO? Seems that President Trump is doing a turnaround to a degree.

The NATO turnaround is amazing. This is a complete reversal of Trump’s earlier views. No wonder Merkel is laughing.

Albania and Croatia are already NATO members so this completes the NATO presence all around the Adriatic Sea. A couple of the existing members have smaller militaries than Montenegro.
