Maybe the problem is that my checks don't bounce and my CC is not over its limit.

At age 30, dressed like the artist I am, I went to the main office of a prominent bank, where I had an account, to deposit a $5k cashiers check. I was funneled from a teller to the assistant to a VP and the condescension was palpable. Obviously, they could not believe I had come by that check honestly.
On the way to the VP’s office, we passed a painting by Helen Frankenthaler. I stopped to look at it and just breathed her name, as she is/was one of my idols. The sneering assistant, who was younger than I was, said: “How would someone like you know that?” I just answered, “I’m an artist.”
Was I discriminated against? Was it my floppy black hat? Was it that I looked younger than I was? It had nothing to do with skin color, that I know for a fact.
Anyway, they accepted my check, after a phone call, began treating me with respect and the next day I wrote a check to another bank for the entire contents of the account and closed it. Permanently. Never dealt with them again.
