“After a bankruptcy their standard of living will slip to that of the Dominican Republic, thats when the clamor for statehood begins”
Yup, agree. However, there’s that pesky Law of Unintended Consequences that seems to pop up at the most inopportune time. Not sure about this but I assume that PR has the right to become an independent country, same as the Philippines is it chooses. If this is correct and if it should ever happen it could cause bigger problems for us. Think Cuba....
Direct flights to New Jersey, Havana, Miami, Bogota, and Rio.
Well it’s bad news for those remaining on the island, they are losing a considerable number of medical specialists and other highly skilled people, business men, ect.
There are those in PR who have been clamoring for independence. I say give it to them and stop all U.S. taxpayer support of that mismanaged (corrupt) island.
They realize they’re broke now, so support for independence has waned and support for statehood is rising.
“The next referendum will only be two choices, statehood or independence. They will vote for statehood.
It was this vote that convinced me to start agitating for the Cantorization of our weasel, Eric Cantor.
By removing the third option of remaining a commonwealth the Uniparty tipped their hand that it has already been decided by our betters that Puerto Rico will be a state.”
Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rosselló is strongly in favor of statehood to help save the economy. Benefits of statehood include an additional $10 billion per year in federal funds, the right to vote in presidential elections, higher Social Security and Medicare benefits, and a right for its government agencies and municipalities to file for bankruptcy.
The corrupt politicians who have bankrupted Puerto Rico want statehood because they think the American taxpayers will give them billions in free money and bail them out.
Statehood is not theirs simply by voting it in. They already are a territory and the citizens are actually already born US citizens, but Congress determines who gets invited to be a state.
Personally, I think it’s a beautiful island. If properly run it would be a tourist mecca and economic asset. It is also in a significant geo-political location and losing that would be worse than keeping it.
I’d favor it keep its current status to see if it can work out its economic woes. If it could it would be prime real estate.
“Well its bad news for those remaining on the island, “
You are right. They are also losing an entire generation of younger folks who weigh no-opportunity on the island against opportunity on the mainland and make the right choice.
Everyone left will be on disability or some other form of entitlement/welfare.
Now, where do they go from here? Based on the present situation, I think the last thing one should trust Puerto Rico’s future to is to Puerto Ricans....
I expect a renewed push for statehood coming up. I am not exactly thrilled with acquiring 2 leftist Senators and a number of leftist representatives should they become a state, but eventually I think they will be successful in achieving statehood. Either that or most of Puerto Rico’s working age population will continue to flock to the US causing the island to further degenerate economically. We subsidized them way too much as it is, something has to give before long.
President Trump is not clinton, bush, carter or any other liberal left wing Republic hater.
“I expect a renewed push for statehood coming up.”
Maybe. I doubt it will be seriously considered any time soon, regardless of what PR wants.

Laughing at you for not knowing that citizens of PR are Americans. who pissed in your Wheaties?
