Washington (AFP) - White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer got himself in hot water Tuesday when he appeared to -- at least momentarily -- forget the Holocaust, suggesting Adolf Hitler did not use chemical weapons on his own people.
Speaking about a chemical attack in Syria which the US blames on Bashar al-Assad, Donald Trump's high-profile spokesman said: "You had someone as despicable as Hitler who didn't even sink to using chemical weapons."
His comments, on the first day of the Jewish festival of Passover, brought looks of astonishment from the assembled White House press corps, who offered Spicer a chance to clarify.

A josh moment???
“offered a chance to ‘clarify’”
Gee, WG press corps . . . you can’t figure out he was referring to battleground gas?
What passes for “news” and “gasps” nowadays is really incredulous
Godwin’s Law violation.
I was not aware of Hitler using Chemical/WMD weapons on the battlefield. If it is actually the case, I am sure many Freeper historians will set me straight.
Why why why why why didn’t he say “I meant Hitlery”??
Sean....a bit of wise, sober advice.....Stay away from Hitler......using Hitler works for no one!!! Hitler was simply an equal opportunity killer of all races and creeds!!!
How is that a ‘stumble’?
I can set you straight by referring you to the article.
Spicer did not say that even Hitler didn’t use poison gas on the battlefield. He said: “You had someone as despicable as Hitler who didn’t even sink to using chemical weapons.”
It all begs the question anyway since it hasn’t been established, or at least I haven’t seen any evidence that Assad used poison gas against ISIS.
Yeah I know. I’m smarter than Trump/
History Lesson: Why No Poison Gas?
authored by a leading historian on World War II
He didn't but had tons of it. Some Generals wanted to unleash it during the Battle of Seelow Heights. Russians captured stockpiles of it, one close to where the famous "Maus" tank factory was and reportedly the only "Maus" vs JS2 tank battle took place.
There were also a couple of late war commando raids to secure bunkers that had mustard and chorline gas in them. That is how most of the FG-42 machineguns made it back (and onto the NFA registry) after Patton and Hodges forces captured some Fallshirmjager troops.
Those debates were awesome!
oops....he was focusing on attacking an enemy in the field....and trapped himself. Really...he misspoke.
Not even mentioned in this thread is that Hitler did use ‘gas’, poison gas to kill alot of souls in the concentration camps.
Frankly I’d have thought Spicer was talking about the battlefield and specifically when The Allies crossed into Germany.
Spicer is technically correct, but that was clumsy.
What a TRULY retarded thing for ANYONE to get their mammary glands in a wringer about.
A very stupid and tone deaf statement.
